Assignment: Special Education Resource Teacher – McAuliffe Elementary
FTE: 1.0
Start Date:  August 2024

Position Purpose 
Special education teachers in ISD 200 empower students to build their independence by providing direct instruction in the areas of academics, functional skills, behavior regulation, social/emotional skills and daily living skills in a safe learning environment. Teachers are under the daily supervision of the building Principal and overall supervision of the Director/Assistant Director of Special Services.

 

Qualifications:

  • Required Certification:   K-12 Minnesota licensure in one of the following licensure areas: Academic Behavior Strategist (ABS) or any combination of Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD)
  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level and disability areas preferred
  • Experience and knowledge of due process paperwork including Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), Behavior Support Plans, evaluations, and progress reports
  • Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with parents, students, staff, and administrators 
  • Ability to perform routine computer functions, including using email, Google Suite and due process system
  • Thorough understanding of the laws, rules and regulations of special education

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Employ high expectations for students using a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
  • Understand and implement learning interventions to meet the varying learning styles and needs of a diverse student population
  • Develop and demonstrate culturally responsive practices that lead to equitable outcomes for all students, particularly those groups of students that are over-represented in special education
  • Advocate for students with disabilities to ensure high levels of achievement
  • Demonstrate proactive responses to support students with emotional or behavior regulation difficulties
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of various forms of assistive technology to support students in accessing the appropriate tools for efficiency
  • Collaborate with others to plan, teach and support students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment
  • Ability to direct the work of paraprofessionals and an understanding of practices for training and supporting paraprofessionals
  • Facilitate effective IEP team meetings with parents and other professionals
  • Plan and complete comprehensive special education evaluations, including Functional Behavior Assessment
  • Write and implement IEPs and Behavior Support Plans that include measurable goals and appropriate accommodations
  • Demonstrate leadership and effective communication when problem solving students’ needs
  • Proficient in meeting deadlines and managing daily record keeping and other due-process related tasks
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to prospective colleges and employers, as required by district procedures and applicable laws
  • Complete and maintain certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training, provided by the district
  • Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed. 
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research, and by maintaining professional relationships with members of institutions of higher learning and the business community. 
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents

 

Additional Duties 

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Director/Assistant Director of Special Services.
