Job Title: Special Education Paraprofessional

Location: Watertown Mayer Public School District, Watertown, MN 55388

Job Summary: The Special Education Paraprofessional will work under the supervision of special education teachers and support staff to provide individualized assistance and support to students with disabilities in a school-based setting. The Paraprofessional will assist in implementing educational and behavioral strategies outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and collaborate with teachers and related service providers to promote student success and inclusion.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct support to students with disabilities in academic, social, and behavioral settings, under the guidance and supervision of special education teachers and related service providers.
  2. Assist students with completing classroom assignments, tasks, and activities, adapting materials and instructional strategies as needed to meet individualized learning goals.
  3. Implement behavior management strategies and positive reinforcement techniques to support students in developing appropriate behaviors and social skills.
  4. Support students in navigating classroom routines and transitions, providing prompts, reminders, and encouragement as needed to promote independence and success.
  5. Assist with small group instruction and activities, reinforcing concepts and skills introduced by the teacher and providing additional support as necessary.
  6. Collaborate with teachers and support staff to collect data on student progress, behavior, and participation in classroom activities, and communicate observations and concerns as appropriate.
  7. Support students with disabilities during lunchtime, recess, and other non-academic activities, ensuring their safety and engagement in inclusive settings.
  8. Assist with the implementation of accommodations and modifications outlined in students’ IEPs, including the use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
  9. Provide personal care and assistance to students with disabilities, including toileting, feeding, and mobility support, as needed and in accordance with individualized plans and guidelines.
  10. Maintain confidentiality of student information and adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines in all interactions and responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred). 
  • HIghly qualified status preferred, if not, the district will provide training to become a highly qualifed paraprofessional.
  • Previous experience working with children or individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational or special education setting.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to follow directions, collaborate with others, and maintain professionalism in challenging situations.
  • Knowledge of basic academic concepts and instructional strategies, with the ability to adapt materials and activities to meet individualized learning needs.
  • Flexibility, patience, and a passion for supporting the success and inclusion of students with disabilities.
