Job Description: 

The Special Education Coordinator performs duties ranging from student instruction, to coordinating and completing due process paperwork, to overseeing the special education assessment process from start to finish. This position requires vast knowledge of the special education system in the state of Minnesota. The legal aspects of this position require acute attention to detail, process, and timelines. The Special Education Coordinator supervises some Associate Educators and Special Education Teachers and must clearly communicate with staff members, families, and outside consultants in order to effectively complete the duties of the job. 

 

The following tasks are representative of the duties of the Special Education Coordinator:

  • Instruction and Program Development: Facilities collaboration between Special Education and General Education teachers through instructional strategies, programs, methodologies, and instructional accommodations/aids in areas of special education licensure(s); provide strategic instruction for students with disabilities affecting learning 1-to-1 or in small groups, within the classroom or through pull-out groups; demonstrate commitment to refining curriculum approaches and materials to increase students’ progress; show increasing skill with all aspects of the curriculum, intensifying and tailoring these for students with learning disabilities; measure and report student progress to teachers and families; provide professional development relating to Special Education. 

  • Student Assessment: Coordinates assessment of students referred for special education evaluation; perform academic testing during special education evaluation process; maintain assessment records.

  • Special Education Due Process: Provides indirect evidence of knowledge and skills in special education due process procedures and required documentation and record keeping; meet with parents/teams and update IEPs yearly; facilitate/implement assessments for students who are referred to special education; facilitate reassessments of students in special education every three years; report progress to parents; plan and facilitate child study meetings; communicate with special education director and other consultants/service providers; Provide ongoing support for the parents of students with disabilities, informing them of Special Education rights and procedures, as well as exchanging insights about the needs and progress of their child; Ensure tuition billing forms are sent to area districts for reimbursement of services received by special education students.

  • Teacher Support and Lesson Planning: Communicate with teachers throughout the special education evaluation process; act as a resource to general education teachers; assist with the statewide accountability testing process; plan appropriate daily academic lessons. 

  • Supervisor: Supervises and manages the work of Special Education Teachers and Associate Educators; works with leadership team to develop schedules and professional development calendar for Special Education team, leads Special Education check-in meetings, and provides mid-year and end-of-year evaluations for staff supervised.

  • Mission/Vision:  This position must support the school in achieving its mission and vision.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Preference is given to candidates with a Master’s degree or additional certification(s) within the field of Special Education.

  • Minnesota Teaching License

  • The ideal candidate has a minimum of two years of experience working with students in the field of Special Education in an elementary school setting.

  • This position requires knowledge of Special Education Due Process and state and federal laws governing Special Education programs in Minnesota

  • Spanish speaker preferred but not required
