Job Description: 

The Special Education Teacher performs duties ranging from student instruction to coordinating and completing due process paperwork. The function of this position centers around building targeted academic, behavioral, and social skills for elementary students. The teacher in this position will provide direct instruction in both push-in and pull-out settings, monitor data and goals, and communicate effectively with families, teachers, and other providers.

The following tasks are representative of the duties of the Special Education Coordinator:

  • Direct Skills Instruction: Plans and delivers instruction for targeted reading, math, behavior, or social skills in a clear and culturally responsive manner, aligned to research-based curriculum. 

  • Effective Collaboration: Facilitates collaboration between Special Education and General Education teachers through instructional strategies, programs, methodologies, and instructional accommodations/aids in areas of special education licensure(s); provide strategic instruction for students with disabilities affecting learning 1-to-1 or in small groups, within the classroom or through pull-out groups; demonstrate commitment to refining curriculum approaches and materials to increase students’ progress.

  • Student Assessment: Coordinates assessment of students referred for special education evaluation; performs testing aligned to evaluation and annual review, maintains assessment records, modifies and intensifies instruction to match student needs, measures and reports student progress to teachers and families

  • Special Education Due Process: Provides required documentation and record keeping; meets with parents/teams and updates IEPs yearly; supports assessments for students who are referred to special education; supports reassessments of students in special education every three years; reports progress to parents/families

  • Teacher Support and Lesson Planning: Communicates with teachers throughout the special education evaluation process; act as a resource to general education teachers; assist with the statewide accountability testing process; plans appropriate daily academic lessons. 

  • Mission/Vision:  This position must support the school in achieving its mission and vision.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position. Preference is given to candidates with a Master’s degree or additional certification(s) within the field of Special Education.

  • Minnesota Teaching License

  • The ideal candidate has a minimum of two years of experience working with students in the field of Special Education in an elementary school setting.

  • This position requires knowledge of Special Education Due Process and state and federal laws governing Special Education programs in Minnesota

  • Spanish speaker preferred but not required
