Position Description
Park Rapids Area Schools – School Health Specialist, Century School, 7 hours/day, 5 days/week 

POSITION PURPOSE:         To assist the licensed school nurse in the smooth and efficient operation of the school health service in order to realize that service’s maximum positive impact on the educational environment.
 
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE:  High School Diploma and 2 year LPN Program  OR  Practical Nursing Diploma from an accredited college.
LICENSE NEEDS:  LPN Licensure required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Current in CPR and HIPAA Training

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   None
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:                                                                            
                                                                                                                                                 

  1. Perform specialized medical care, as delegated by district LSN, including, but not limited to:  Tube feedings; Rectal Valium administration; Fragile respiratory status; Seizure disorders; Insulin injection administration.
  2. Performs clerical services in the health office including filing state required reports and mandated reporter forms, correspondence, reports to teachers, parents, health care providers, and accident reports.
  3. Evaluate Health status of students using nursing skills to assess the health status of medically fragile and special needs students.
  4. Implement IHP’S
  5. Attend IEP meetings
  6. Provide skilled nursing care to medically fragile students with complex nursing needs.
  7. Refer Students to other district support staff, i.e. school counselor, in home interventionist.
  8. Make referral/reports to outside agencies, i.e. social service.
  9. Coordinate screening programs.
  10. Administer and document medications and treatments based on parent and licensed prescriber authorization per school policy.
  11. Serve on committees, i.e. Health and Safety
  12. Prepares and maintains a cumulative health record and emergency card, and data such as vision, hearing, immunizations, reasons for extended absences, etc., for each child.
  13. Maintains a daily log of student health services provided and a monthly health report.
  14. Plans for and takes care of emergency illness or accidents which occur at school, as directed by school nurse in accordance with procedure.
  15. Communicates with parents/guardians in case of acute illness or injury.
  16. Administers medication according to school policy.
  17. Screens and recommends to the principal that students with suspected communicable diseases be excluded in accordance with school district policy and reports individual communicable disease cases to the nurse for further follow up and referral.
  18. Maintains health office in clean, sanitary manner and maintains continuous inventory of first aid supplies, office supplies and equipment according to Health Regulations.
  19. Maintains communication between school nurse and students, parents, and school personnel for health related information and requests for nursing services.
  20. Maintains confidentiality of all student data.
  21. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor.
  22. Perform appropriate Health Care Procedures as delegated.
