SALARY: $74,821 – $85,377 depending on qualifications with advancement to $104,748

Position Description:
The Accounting Supervisor within Rochester Public Schools plays a central role in ensuring the financial health and integrity of our educational institution. Reporting to the Manager of Accounting, you will oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of the Accounting Technicians, perform routine accounting tasks, including reconciliations and month-end close, implement technological solutions for process improvement, and maintain compliance with governmental regulations and accounting standards. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the efficient management of financial resources, supporting our mission to provide quality education to students within our community.
 
Responsibilities:

1. Supervision and Leadership

a. Lead a team of clerical professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
b. Coordinate work assignments, prioritize tasks, and ensure timely completion of accounting activities.
c. Foster a collaborative and supportive work environment to promote teamwork and professional development.

2. Financial Operations, Reporting and Analysis

a. Oversee the preparation of financial statements, reports, and analyses to support decision-making processes.
b. Review accounting transactions, journal entries, and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting principles.
c. Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement, and effectively communicate findings to senior leaders.

3. Treasury Services

a. Perform banking activities for the district, including issuing of checks and ACH files, resolving banking issues, and maintaining staff access to online banking systems.
b. Transfer funds between various District banking and investment accounts at the direction of department leaders.
c. Maintain accurate cash flow projections and provide recommendations regarding investment opportunities that align with MN state statutes and District financial goals.

4. Budget Management

a. Assist in the development, monitoring, and execution of the annual budget, working closely with department heads and administrators.
b. Track budgetary performance against projections, investigate discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions as needed.
c. Provide support during budget planning sessions and contribute to the development of long-term financial strategies.

5. Compliance and Auditing

a. Ensure compliance with governmental regulations, accounting standards, and internal policies and procedures.
b. Support audits conducted by external firms by providing necessary documentation and explanations, and effectively implement audit recommendations.
c. Stay informed about changes in accounting regulations and best practices, and make recommendations for process improvements.

6. Financial Systems Management

a. Identify and implement efficiencies in accounts payable and accounts receivable processes using technology to streamline operations and improve accuracy.
b. Collaborate with technology professionals to address system issues, implement upgrades, and enhance system functionality.
c. Provide training and support to staff on the use of financial systems and tools.

Education and Experience:
An Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience is required. A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Previous experience in a supervisory or managerial role is required.
• Ability to lead others in change management while implementing industry best practices.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices. • Proficient in the use of modern technology, including web browsers, Google Suite and Excel.
• Deep understanding of the fundamental operation of accounting software systems. • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Knowledge of MN Uniform Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards (UFARS) and regulatory compliance is desired.   

Typical Working Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment with regular interruptions. Work is performed while seated most of the time and involves long periods of computer work.

Physical Requirements for This Position:
• Majority of time will be spent in a seated position.
• Bending, reaching, and simultaneous use of hands are needed for typing.
• Excellent sensory skills (sight, hearing, and speech).
• Occasional lifting articles such as file boxes.
