Description

Position Summary:
Provide classroom supplemental support for migrant students, focusing on credit accrual and recovery for students in grades 9-12. This position will include providing content, language, and experiential learning in the classroom.

The students’ day is divided broadly into two sections. From breakfast until lunch, we focus on academics. For secondary students, we start the program with a personalized intake to determine how each student would best benefit from the Migrant Education Program. From there, we use our human and technical resources to help the student attain their individualized academic goal. These goals may include preparing for a “Credit-by-Exam” language exam, completing requried coursework in Edgenuity, preparing for a content exam they take in order to earn credit in Texas, or gain academic skills in other areas like writing, language acquisition, and more. Students have the opportunity to check out Chromebooks and Hotspots so as to independently pursue their goals at home. Bilingual EA support is provided all day. The teacher will collaborate with and direct the activities of the Bilingual EA to maximize benefits to the students. The second part of the day is focused on enrichment. This can include STEAM activities, physical fitness, community outreach, field trips, and more. Teachers’ interests and passions often drive this part of the day. MEP teachers often work collaboratively to plan various activities for the students. By being placed at the Middle School, we have access to the fitness room, gym, prairie, soccer and baseball fields, and more.

Teachers need to commit to 3 days of planning (4 hours / day) and 5 weeks of instruction (4 days / week; 7.7 hours / day). The only absences that will be approved during this time are for illness. Hiring is dependent on enrollment.

Qualifications:
Valid MN Teaching License required. Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and experience serving underserved youth and strong Reading and/or English Language background desired. Current Owatonna Public School District employee preferred. Consistent and reliable attendance.
