WORK DAY:  6.5 hours per day; approximately 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

WORK CALENDAR:  180 duty days per year.

The Special Education ESP provides support to students at the school site with needs who qualify for special education services in various school environments. The position is also responsible for implementing aspects of the student’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) under the direction of certified staff.  This can include instructional support, behavior management, health support, collecting data, and communicating academic and behavioral progress at the school site.   Percentage of time spent on essential duties and responsibilities will be dependent on the individual student’s needs and abilities.
  
Students determined to be Physically Impaired (PI) have medically diagnosed, chronic, physical impairment, either congenital or acquired, that may adversely affect physical or academic functioning and result in the need for special education and related services.
 

  • You will be working with 1 student who needs one to one assistance with all aspects of the school day.
  • Follow student Behavior Intervention Plans and Emergency Healthcare Plans.
  • Observe and document students’ academic and social behaviors.
  • Consistent and accurate data collection of student progress on goals and objectives
  • Provide feedback on student progress
  • Knowledge using iPads and other devices used for communication of non-verbal students
  • Supervise students in various settings and locations in and around the school building, before, during and after school hours.
  • Provide Support/Supervision at meal times, at recess and on field trips
  • Follow student Behavior Intervention Plans and Emergency Healthcare Plans.
  • Model appropriate language and social behavior
  • Able to build strong relationships with children from all backgrounds and neuro-types.
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Effective communication with all staff
  • Consultation with the case manager on transfers for positioning throughout the school day. 
  • Positioning transfers often require more than one person, so consult with the case manager and PT for appropriate transfers may be required. 
  • Proper use of Hoyer Lifts, standers, and gait trainers.  (Training provided as needed)    
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Regular, on-time attendance is required.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement; 60 college semester credits and/or a two-year degree from an accredited college or university.  Please include official transcript(s) with application.
  • In lieu of college credits or degree, one can complete the ParaPro Assessment test. The passing score in Minnesota is 460.

  • The test is available to applicants who are presented an official job offer from the Rochester Public School District. 
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience working with elementary age students.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work as a cooperative team member.
  • Positive rapport with children including the ability to correct inappropriate student behavior with fairness and consistency.
  • Regular, on-time attendance is required.
