Job Summary:                   Instructs special needs students in education subjects appropriate to learning ability, grade level and district/state curriculum requirements.
 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Teaches District approved curriculum daily.
  2. Develops lesson plans and instructional material and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil daily.
  3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Translates lesson plans into developmentally-appropriate learning experiences daily.
  5. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals daily.
  7. Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc. and communicates these objectives to students.
  8. Assists students in establishing and maintaining standards of behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere daily.
  9. Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports as appropriate and required.
  10. Identifies pupil needs and makes appropriate referrals and assists in developing strategies for individual education plans daily as needed.
  11. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner daily as needed.
  12. Communicates regularly with parents outside of the normal classroom day by various means such as newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc. daily as needed.
  13. Provides oversite and guidance for paraprofessionals, parents and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips as needed.
  14. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.
  15. Participates on school committees as needed.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related.
  • Teaching certification in Special Education required.
  • Minimum 1 year successful educational and instructional experience in a public school special education setting.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with core subject matter concepts and apply concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
  • Knowledge and experience using varied computer applications and applied technology experience. 

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Employee is continuously required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, talk, and hear; frequently sits, stoops, kneels and/or crouches, reach with hands and arms in the performance of the job.  Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally; and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
