POSITION: SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL
LOCATION: MN VIRTUAL SCHOOL
REPORTS TO: BUILDING DIRECTOR

 
Description: Assist teachers with implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual, emotional, social and physical development of students with disabilities in a safe, healthy learning environment. This position will support students with academic learning, problem solving, and restorative practices in a small school setting.
 
Job Summary:
Instructional and Behavioral Support

  • Guide and assist students with lessons, activities and technology tasks under the direction of the teacher
  • Problem solving and support of students with social/emotional/behavioral needs throughout the school day
  • Reinforce concepts across settings that were taught in specialized instruction
  • Participate in meetings where communication and implementing strategies are discussed
  • Monitor and track student behavior daily, provide student feedback, implement incentive systems
  • Maintain resource room academic, social, emotional and behavioral strategy use daily
  • Adapt and modify coursework under the direction of the teacher
  • Assist teachers with behavior support plan implementation
  • Assist teachers and students with the use of communicate strategies and devices as directed by the special education teacher and/or Speech/Language Pathologist
  • Assist students under the direction of Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy
  • Basic office duties related to the documentation and implementation of specialized programming
  • Other duties as assigned

Personal Care Assistance (when required as per the IEP)

  • Assist student with dressing; physical management of students; personal hygiene of students
  • Administer medication and medical needs under direction of school nurse
  • Perform student transfer/mobility and mobility assistance
  • Provide bathroom assistance and toileting of students

 
Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 2 years experience working with children, preferably children with disabilities, and demonstrate highly qualified status; or AA degree with 1 year of experience working with children preferably children with disabilities
  • Personal Care Assistant certification (upon hire)
  • Intermediate computer/keyboarding skills
  • Basic instructional and assistive technology knowledge
  • Advanced reading and writing skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to compute rate, ratio, percentages and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to relate to students including those with disabilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information at all times

Hours: Monday-Friday school hours by school assignment

move up to 10 pounds and occasionally may have to lift a student who could weigh over 100 pounds. The employee must be willing to be trained in and use de-escalation/restraint techniques for managing crisis situations.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
