Brooklyn Center Community Schools (BCCS) is seeking a passionate School Social Worker to join our community! This position will support the implementation and coordination of the Homework Starts with Home homelessness prevention program for the district and supports the ECSE program by leading the intake process, connecting students and families to services, and providing service and support for students during the school day. Under general supervision, within BCCS the School Social Worker promotes and supports students’ academic, mental health, and social success by providing  services, supports, consultation and resource connections within a multidisciplinary team through the Community Schools model. The position is part time, with flexibility  of .5-.8 FTEs, depending on the applicant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a safe, trusting space for students
  • Provides direct and indirect social work services to students with special education services experiencing difficulties with mental health, social, emotional, and/or behavior
  • Supports the referral and intake process for the team
  • Assist with crisis assessment and response during the school day
  • Provides direct social/emotional/behavioral skill service to students; performs mental health and SEL screenings; provides SEL, mental health and Restorative Practices support
  • Connects students and families with basic needs resources; communicates, problem solves and shares information with community partners.
  • Supports families district-wide in accessing community supports by determining initial eligibility and coordinating services
  • Provides community outreach regarding programs and services that are available to families, through tabling at events, presenting to community ad professional groups, and particpating in collaborative spaces (in general and also specific to housing and the Homework Starts with Home program)
  • Participates in the building teams such as Child Study Team
  • Supports special education evaluation completion, IEP goal development, monitoring and progress reporting.
  • Provides consultation and training to staff on mental health, social, emotional, and behavioral topics.
  • Facilitates communication and collaboration among school, home, and community providers.

Knowledge, Skills and, Abilities Preferred: 

  • Prior experience working in a school setting preferred
  • Prior experience with SEL in schools and Restorative Practices
  • Prior experience with special education due process requirements preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, methods, and techniques used for assessing needs of individual students
  •  Thorough knowledge of federal and state mandates and local procedures and regulations relating to social and community support programs
  • Thorough knowledge of school and district rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Good judgment and decision making

Qualifications: Certification/License: Licensed through the MN Board of Social Work and through MDE

Pay and Benefits: Competitive Pay and Benefits based on the contract
Duty Days: includes 8 paid holidays, duty days will vary based on FTE
