Position: School Social Worker
Work Schedule: 
8 hours/day
Start Date: Fall 2024

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid MN teaching license as a school social worker
  • Licensed by the MN Board of Social Work
  • High academic standards
  • Knowledge and understanding of current instructional theory and practice
  • Experience working in a school setting
  • Excellent skills in collaborating

Desired Qualifications:

  • Multi age training and experience
  • Cultural competency
  • Computer proficiency
  • Background in behavior disorders and mental health
  • Understanding of special education due process

Responsibilities:  

  • Consult with teachers, parents, and administrators to develop intervention strategies to reduce barriers to school success
  • Identify and coordinate family, school, and community resources to enable each child to receive maximum benefit from his/her educational program
  • Provide direct/indirect social worker services as specified on student’s IEP
  • Provide social work assessments and other related services as defined in IDEA for students receiving special education support
  • Identify factors in a child’s home, school, and community that affect his/her success in learning
  • Help school personnel to better understand how factors such as family, culture, socioeconomic status, and physical and mental health can affect students’ performance and behavior
  • Assess student functioning across environments
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students and their families
  • Serve as a resource to building staff regarding identification and reporting of child abuse/neglect
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams
  • Provide crisis intervention
  • Consult and collaborate with community agencies and mental health professionals
  • Uphold the ethical standards of the social work profession
  • Provide service coordination for students and families requiring multiple services or resources
  • Develop prevention and intervention programs to address violence, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, and harassment
  • Provide parent education and training
  • Participate in policy development and on committees addressing issues such as discipline, attendance, mandatory reporting, and school climate
  • Other related duties as assigned
