School Nurse, District Leadership Team

Supervise: Health Assistants

Reports to: Principal / Superintendent

 

JOB LOCATIONS: 

Sibley East Elementary is located in Gaylord, MN.  Sibley East MS/ HS is located in Arlington, MN.  District 2310 covers the surrounding Sibley county area.  Support for students may, at times, mean traveling to student homes, or other locations of student assessments (schools, churches, community centers, etc.), sites of continuing educational workshops.

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Responsible for providing direct nursing service, directing and overseeing the Health Services program for the District. Serve as a liaison between school, parents and community in health related matters. Function as a professional within the Nurse Practice Act.

 

Qualifications

  • Requires Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health Nursing and R.N. License, Public Health Nursing Certificate from the Department of Health and State Department of Education School Nurse License.

  • Two to four years school or public health nursing experience preferred.

  • Valid CPR and First Aide certificate

  • Current and valid Minnesota driver’s license, reliable transportation, and automobile insurance. 

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

 

  • Develop written health plans for chronically ill or medically fragile students needing health procedures and accommodations, communicate with, support and monitor staff in implementation of the health plans and evaluate student outcomes.

  • Supervise and train Health Para educators and delegate health care services to and monitor care provided by them.

  • Develop, supervise and evaluate a system of first aid, illness management and emergency care and coordinate prevention and control of communicable diseases; provide emergency first aid.

  • Assist in the District’s preschool screening program consistent with MN Statutes.

  • Serve as a resource to staff, students and families regarding health related concerns and health education, conduct health related classroom presentations as appropriate, meet with parents as necessary, conduct home visits and serve as liaison regarding health matters between the District and community agencies.

  • Plan and provide for vision, hearing and scoliosis screening with follow up referrals as appropriate and refer students for examination, treatment and monitoring of health issues.

  • Establish a student health record keeping system and review health and immunization records of all new students in order to ensure that all students have a health record consistent with Minnesota Statute.

  • Develop district health related policies and ensure compliance with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations.

  • Attend student planning and concerns meetings IEP meetings as necessary.

  • Implement and monitor student compliance with state immunization laws and file various health reports as required.

  • Serve as member of various committees such as Child Abuse, Crisis Intervention, Wellness, and Curriculum committees.

  • Provide needed health information to appropriate bus drivers so that bus drivers are aware of student health problems.

  • Serve as District contact person for sexual health student needs and pregnant teens and as liaison between teens and Sibley County Public Health.

  • Attend meetings, workshops and training sessions as directed by supervisor.

  • Coordinate activities with Minnesota Department of of Health

  • Other such duties as assigned or apparent.

Use of of equipment includes but not limited to; Audiometers, eye charts, otoscopes/ophthalmoscopes, sphygmomanometer/stethoscope, catheters, syringes, IV equipment, developmental testing kits, audio-visual equipment, glucometer, catheter equipment, bladder irrigation equipment, dressings, appliances, medications (injectable and oral), teaching materials, vaccines, charts, ostomy supplies, health assessment screening tools, computer, personal vehicle, durable medical equipment, wound care supplies.
