Position Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Licensed School Nurse(LSN) must manage all the programs and students so that they all are safe and any unexpected events or medical emergencies are managed in a safe and effective manner. The LSN shall enforce the State rules and regulations to ensure the operation of the educational program. To provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling management, and/or referrals concerning the health and medical care needs of students for the purpose of minimizing absences due to illness, maximizing educational opportunities, and creating a healthy school climate.

Essential Duties

  • Collaborate with administration to ensure district policies and procedures comply with state and federal mandates
  • Maintain a system of first aid, emergency care, and safe medication administration for students
  • Coordinate vision and hearing screening for students per district and Minnesota Department of Health guidelines and policies
  • Ensure immunization records are up to date or proper documentation has been provided per Minnesota Department of Health guidelines and district policies
  • Provide consultation, delegation, and training to students, staff, and parents on health/medical issues
  • Consult with physicians and health care agencies regarding the status of students
  • Promote the well-being of students by providing group or individual instruction, consultation, or information regarding health issues and the spread of communicable diseases
  • Collaborate with general and special education staff, including transporation and food service staff, to address student health needs and the resulting educational implications
  • Participate in Individual Education Program (IEP) Team meetings, Student Support Team (SST) meetings, building meetings, and professional learning activities
  • Coordinate with and provide work direction and guidance to school administrative assistants
  • Participate in special education comprehensive evaluations of students 
  • Provide leadership in the development and implementation of IEPs or Individiualized Health Care Plans for students with medical and health needs
  • Provide direct nursing services to students as determined appropriate (i.e., services that cannot be delegated)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Training

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • Preferred: Master’s, Educaiton Specialist or Doctorate in Nursing or Related Field

Licensure/Certification

  • Minimum: MN Registered(RN) license, Public Health Nurse(PHN) certification, and MN Public School Nurse(PSN) license or ability to obtain licensure

Work Experience

  • Preferred: Three or more years working in a related position

Additional Information

  • Reports to the Executive Director of Special Educaiton
  • Travel within and occasionally outside of the RRSEC member districts
  • Frequest computer use including long periods without movement

183 days and 11 additional days for ESY
