Middle School Guidance Counselor

Job Summary:           ROCORI counselors provide necessary services to support the district’s mission statement.  Given the social/emotional issues of this mission, counselors provide individual and group counseling, and/or consultation services to students, staff, and parents.  The Middle School Counselor is responsible for the development, implementation, and coordination of the overall counseling program in the middle school.
 

Duties/Responsibilities:
 

  1. Individual Counseling Services
    1. Assists students with personal growth and development.
    2. Conducts Sixth, Seventh grade, and new student orientation.  Conducts intake interviews and follow-up.
    3. Works with students with academic difficulties.
    4. Performs evaluation and interpretation of tests and school records.
    5. Performs crisis management as required.
    6. Provides career information to students.
    7. Acts as mandated reporter for the Middle School.
  2. Small Group Counseling
    1. Helps students with self-awareness and self-concept development.
    2. Guides students on developing Interpersonal relationships.
    3. Assists students with improving communication skills.
  3. Group Guidance
    1. Career awareness and providing of occupational information of particular interest to students.
    2. Provides and communicates test interpretations.
    3. Leads peer group counseling.
  4. Student Records
    1. Keeps current accurate records of student progress.
  5. Testing
    1. Helps orienting students to testing programs.
    2. Conducts testing sessions.
    3. Interprets test results for students and makes data available upon request to parents and appropriate staff.
  6. Registration
    1. Assists with procedures for registration of students in courses.
    2. Conducts the registration process for middle school students.
  7. Communication
    1. Disseminates information to parents, students, and staff.
    2. Assists with parent education/information.
    3. Conducts parent conferences.
    4. Is aware of outside resources available to students and families.
    5. Actively works to increase awareness, sensitivity, and communication among counselors and other staff.
  8. Special Education Involvement
    1. Works with students with behavior and mental health needs.
    2. Provides educational alternatives for gifted and talented students.
    3. Assists with District drug and health programs.
    4. Assists with Special Education.
  9. Consultation with Staff – Parents
    1. Provides assistance to parents with referrals to outside resources.
    2. Works with parents to communicate and assist with the Individual needs of students.
    3. Works with parents to coordinate of efforts between home/school.
    4. Assists with grouping students by ability.
    5. Maintains confidentiality of students’ personal and educational development.
  10. Responsible for participation and implementation in and of District Chemical Awareness Programs
    1. Assists with District-wide consultation/coordination of programs.
    2. Participates in preventive programs for K-12 students and parents.
    3. Promotes family wellness concepts in regard to the school’s commitment to responsible use of chemicals.
    4. Provides intervention services.
    5. Provides aftercare programs for students coming out of treatment centers.          
  11. Evaluates and Assesses the overall Counseling Program.
  12. Other duties as needed.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in school counseling or related field.
  • School counselor licensure.
  • Minimum 3 years of school counseling experience in a public education environment preferred.
  • Ability to understand and comply with all protocols related to data privacy and mandated reporting.
  • Ability to aptly assess and diagnose student intellectual, social and/or emotional development.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and experience using varied computer applications and applied technology experience.
