Job Title: Long-Term Substitute High School Special Education Teacher

Location: Watertown Mayer High School 

Duration: August 26, 2024, to October 22, 2024

Job Type: Temporary, Full-Time

Reports To: Special Education Department Head

Position Overview: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Long-Term Substitute Special Education Teacher to join our high school team for the period from August 26 to October 22, 2024. This role involves taking full responsibility for the classroom during the temporary absence of the regular teacher. The ideal candidate will deliver high-quality instruction to students with diverse learning needs, ensuring continuity of education and care with the regular teacher’s curriculum and behavior management guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Delivery:

    • Implement lesson plans left by the regular teacher and adapt teaching methods to meet the varied learning needs of students.
    • Use appropriate educational technology and resources to enhance learning outcomes.
    • Evaluate and assess academic performance and progress in a detailed and systematic manner.
  • Classroom Management:

    • Maintain a structured and engaging learning environment that promotes respect and collaboration among students.
    • Implement behavioral management plans and ensure all students adhere to classroom rules and policies.
    • Address any classroom issues promptly and maintain discipline according to school guidelines.
  • Student Support:

    • Provide individualized instruction and accommodations for students with special educational needs.
    • Encourage and assist students with self-advocacy, communication, and social skills.
    • Foster a classroom atmosphere that is safe and conducive to learning for all students.
  • Communication and Collaboration:

    • Maintain open lines of communication with parents/guardians, providing updates on student progress and receiving feedback on student needs.
    • Work collaboratively with other teachers, aides, and school staff to ensure a cohesive approach to student learning and development.
    • Participate in department and school meetings as required.
  • Record Keeping:

    • Keep accurate records of student performance, attendance, and social growth.
    • Document and report any significant incidents in accordance with school policy and legal requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Valid teaching certification in special education.
  • Proven experience as a Special Education Teacher, with strong references.
  • Deep understanding of the instructional strategies and policies relevant to high school students with disabilities.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the contract.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage in physical activities with students as required (e.g., supporting student mobility).
  • Capability to handle the demands of a full school day, including standing, walking, and occasional lifting.
