Position:  
   Literacy/Instructional  Coach, 5th – 8th Grade

Hours:
 
 1.0 FTE

Salary:
   Per Teachers’ Master Agreement

Qualifications:  

  • Licensed in language arts/communications, minimally grades 5-8.
  • At least 5 years of effective instruction in language arts/literacy.
  • A mastery level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards for ELA.
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of reading and writing instructional strategies necessary to support the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
  • In-depth knowledge of research-based strategies for effective vocabulary instruction within a diverse community of learners.
  • Experience in mentoring/coaching teachers.
  • A strong commitment to team collaboration through collaborative teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the fidelity and implementation of the English Language Arts programs through the analysis of student data and instructional coaching.
  • Work with staff to implement research-based literacy strategies into all curricular areas.
  • Provide staff leadership to ensure understanding of and promote the literacy educational objectives.
  • Continue to pursue personal professional growth through attendance at workshops, conferences, courses, and current relevant readings.
  • Work with principals and staff to develop effective literacy programs, including selecting materials, training teachers, and monitoring & adjusting programs to increase effectiveness.
  • To support and strengthen current literacy initiatives while implementing new, research-based programs, creating a literacy-rich environment and fostering a pure love for reading in our entire Heritage community.

Additional job description and expectations:

  1. Implement “Marzano’s Six Step Process for Teaching Academic Vocabulary.” 
  2. Will co-lead staff-development, available to assist/coach staff in the classroom, monthly newsletters, after school sessions, staff book-club, etc.
  3. Assist with increasing word walls in ALL classrooms.  Oversee “power vocab” for units; goal to increase vocabulary visibility.

Impact on Families:

  1. Get more books into family homes (grant writing needed; i.e. work with ELL staff to target families). 
  2. Family outreach: meetings with families to teach literacy strategies, and create opportunities for more reading (library cards, etc.), newsletters.
