Description:  The Licnsed School Nurse works with the Health Services and educational teams to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning and to promote optimal levels of well-being in students and staff.

Job Summary:
 
1.   Assist in providing nursing services to the students of the School District in order to meet state and federal requirements.
2.   Assist in implementing school health programs in cooperation with staff and community resources to ensure that health related program goals are attained.
3.   Assist in programs that eliminate or minimize the health problems of students that may interfere with learning.
4.   Assist in maintaining first aid, emergency care, and safe environments for students and staff so that a safe learning environment will exist.
5.   Assist in maintaining student health records in order to make readily available accurate and up-to-date student health histories.
6.   Assist in identifying and modifying the health problems of students through health assessments, health histories, health record reviews and screening programs, and developing appropriate Individual Health Plans (IHP) based on student needs.
7.   Participate on student assistance teams and special education teams and participate in the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process on students with health issues impacting on their education.
8.   Administer medication and treatments to students per physician’s orders and parent authorization so that students receive medications and treatments as needed.
9.   Provide health counseling and resources to students and their families in order to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behavior.
10. Assist in the supervision of Health Service Secretaries.
11. Other job related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

1.   BA/BS in nursing or equivalent.
2.   Current licensure as registered nurse, eligible for practice in accordance with the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
3.   License as school nurse, eligible for practice in accordance with the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning.
4.   Experience as a Licensed School Nurse at an elementary and/or secondary level with strong skills in nursing assessment desired.
5.   Certified in first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
6.   Willingness to accept direction from supervisor.
7.   Ability to communicate well verbally and in written form.
8.   Ability to work well with students and families and positively participate as a team Member.
9.   Good human relation skills.
10. Ability to lead and direct the work of others.
11. No allergies to chemicals associated with job duties.
12. Must meet continuing education requirements of Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning and Minnesota Board of Nursing.
