Position:  Debate Coach –  Minnesota Urban Debate League
Work Schedule:  Weekly practice from September to Mid-December after school for up to 3 hours, Up to 10 tournaments on Friday/Saturday’s September – December 2023
Start Date: ASAP
Pay: Stipend of $6500

Program Description:  The Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL) is a program of Augsburg University, which provides resources, and programming to support competitive academic debate in Twin Cities high schools and middle schools.  The mission of MNUDL is to empower students through competitive academic debate to become engaged learners, critical thinkers, and active global citizens who are effective advocates for themselves and their communities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, staff, and families in a diverse work environment
  • Willingness to drive school designated vans and travel with students if needed to tournaments
  • Valid Minnesota Driver’s License, a clean driving record, and proof of insurance
  • Minnesota Department of Justice and federal fingerprint clearances
  • Able to work independently and in partnership with others with little supervision
  • Ability to be attentive to details, be accurate, and be precise
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with secondary school-age students
  • Enthusiastic about working with culturally diverse students
  • Desire to build student advocacy skills
  • Able to serve as a positive role model for students and a commitment to holding all students and adults associated with the program to the same standards

 
Responsibilities:

  • Full responsibility for the overall supervision of the program
  • Ensure the safety and security of the team before, during, and after practice and tournaments
  • Teach students public speaking and debate skills using the curriculum and lesson plans provided by Minnesota Urban Debate League in accordance with MSHSL requirements
  • Break down the debate topic into the language the middle school students can understand and help them with preparing the speeches, rebuttals and cross examinations as outlined in the lesson plans provided
  • Conduct practices and drills to reinforce and evaluate public speaking and debate skill development of each student
  • Manage and implement all necessary logistics for debate competitions
  • Responsible for verifying each athlete’s academic and medical eligibility
