Job Summary:
The Competitive Dance Coach is responsible for coaching and preparing student athletes for competitive dance events at the high school level. This role involves choreographing routines, teaching dance techniques, and fostering an environment that encourages artistic expression, discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness.

Essential Duties:

  1. Choreograph Competitive Routines: Design innovative and competitive dance routines in various styles to showcase the team’s talent and maximize scoring potential at competitions.
  2. Increase Participation: Hold tryouts and meetings to scout for talent within our student body, encouraging students to audition for the team.
  3. Skill Assessment and Development: Evaluate the abilities of dancers to assign positions and roles within routines; focus on individual dancer development as well as overall team performance.
  4. Organize Practice Schedule: Develop and implement a regular practice schedule, balancing team rehearsals, individual feedback sessions, and conditioning workouts.
  5. Facility Scheduling: Work with the athletics director to secure practice and performance spaces that meet the team’s requirements.
  6. Technical Training and Safety: Teach and reinforce dance techniques, ensuring that all movements are performed safely and effectively; prioritize dancer health and injury prevention.
  7. Monitor Academic Performance: Ensure that team members meet academic eligibility requirements for participation in competitive events.
  8. Event Preparation: Prepare dancers for competitions by simulating competition environments, focusing on performance quality, and addressing stage presence and expression.
  9. Behavior Standards and Supervision: Establish clear standards for behavior to maintain team discipline and cohesion; supervise students during practices, competitions, and team events to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
  10. Parental Communication: Maintain open lines of communication with parents or guardians about their children’s participation, progress, and achievements.
  11. Compliance with Regulations: Ensure adherence to all MSHSL regulations and national competition rules.
  12. Represent the Team: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the dance team in interactions with the media, school officials, and the community.
  13. Equipment and Costume Management: Oversee the selection, maintenance, and inventory of costumes, props, and sound equipment.
  14. Award and Recognition: Collaborate with the athletic director to establish criteria for team awards and recognize individual and team achievements.
  15. Participate in Special Events: Organize and participate in events such as dance camps, workshops, showcases, and fundraising activities.

Other Duties:

  1. Professional Development: Attend workshops, seminars, and courses to stay current with dance trends, coaching techniques, and safety protocols.
  2. Perform related duties as assigned by school administration, focusing on contributing to the school’s overall extracurricular program.

Job Specifications:

  • Experience: Proven experience as a competitive dance coach or choreographer, with a strong background in dance techniques and performance coaching.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Deep understanding of coaching, choreography, and the competitive dance landscape. Ability to inspire, motivate, and develop student athletes.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and school staff.
  • Other Requirements: Must pass district background check.
