Shakopee Public Schools is seeking an Attendance Engagement Specialist (full-time, year-round). This position is made possible by funding from Scott County.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct outreach and engagement with students and families to identify barriers to regular school attendance and provide support to address these barriers.
  • Develop and implement attendance improvement strategies and initiatives in collaboration with school administrators, counselors, community and County partners.
  • Provide individualized support to students experiencing chronic absenteeism, addressing underlying issues and connecting them with appropriate resources and services.
  • Collaborate with school personnel to monitor attendance records, identify trends, and intervene early to prevent escalation of truancy.
  • Facilitate workshops and training sessions for students, parents, and school staff on the importance of regular school attendance and strategies for improving attendance rates.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, community organizations, and social service agencies to coordinate support services for students and families.
  • Maintain accurate records of truancy interventions, progress, and outcomes, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements and confidentiality standards.
  • Collaborate with district administrators to develop holistic approaches to addressing truancy and promoting student success.
  • Stay informed about relevant laws, regulations, and best practices related to truancy prevention and student attendance.
  • Collaborate with community and County truancy and educational neglect prevention and diversion programs.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in education, counseling, social work or closely related field. A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience working with students, families, and communities, preferably in a school or social services setting.

Special Knowledge or Skills:

  • Knowledge of attendance policies, educational neglect and truancy laws, and best practices in truancy prevention and intervention and school engagement. 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with students and families from diverse racial, cultural, economic, and linguistic backgrounds
  • Excellent human relations skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with students, families, and staff
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices in education and social services.
  • Fluency in one or more languages other than English strongly preferred 
  • Must be a self-starter, detail oriented, and possess the ability to work independently.
  • Projects a positive, flexible, cooperative and respectful attitude with staff, students, parents and community members.
