Hiawatha Valley Education District is looking for an Austism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Consultant to assist HVED member districts and programs in implementing a continuum of support for students with ASD or other similar communicative disorders.  The ASD consultant provides support on evaluations, identifies needs and assists in the program planning for students with ASD.  This position consults with school personnel, parents, and others regarding planning, implementing and evaluation intervention s for students with ASD.  

This position will reports to the Director of Special Education.

Duties (including, but not limited to):

  • Provide consultation to school personnel, parents and others concerning the basic competency areas of ASD, which include some of the following:
    • Characteristics and implications of ASD
    • Identification process and MN Educational eligibility criteria
    • Assessment of strengths and needs
    • Social skills, behavioral, and communication assessment and interventions
    • Current trends and theories pertaining to ASD
    • Consultation and knowledge of other professional resources
  • Works as part of a team for initial and re-evaluations, helps to determine eligibility under the area of ASD, and assists with writing the Evaluation Report for students with ASD.
  • Support staff in the development of IFSP’s and IEPs that are designed to meet the unique needs of students with ASD as well as Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSP) or Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) to support their functioning within their school environment
  • Consults with various medical, mental health, and other service providers regarding the coordination of services to children with ASD.
  • Promote collaboration between general education and special education staff regarding accommodations and modifications that may help students to reach their IEP goals and access the general curriculum
  • Maintains a written log of student visits and observations, consultations and other relevant activities.
  • Provides on-site coaching and training for school personnel, parents, and others to support the implementation of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP)
  • Attends training sessions, conferences, seminars, district and departmental meetings
  • Keeps up to date with changing developments, trends, instructional and educational technologies pertaining to ASD
  • Keeps up on current legislation, rules and best practices concerning ASD
  • Engage in professional learning opportunities aligned with HVED goals and district-specific needs to inform professional learning opportunities related to ASD programming
  • Complete professional learning plans in collaboration with other team members to ensure alignment with HVED goals
  • Facilitate professional learning using effective adult learning strategies on a variety of ASD-related topics, including assessment, instruction, inclusion, accessibility, assistive technology, secondary transition, and program evaluation
  • Provide on-site coaching and support to enhance implementation of best practices in ASD
  • Facilitate the implementation of best practices in ASD-related assessment, instruction, inclusion, accessibility, and program evaluation
  • Assist in conducting needs assessments to support various resource allocation and/or programming decisions
  • Secure and disseminate resource materials and equipment for ASD-related needs that can be shared across districts
  • Maintain and enforce a Placement Guideline for students transitioning to Federal Setting III and IV programs as well as those reintegrating into mainstream settings
  • Support teams in planning for transitions of students with ASD between buildings (i.e., from elementary to secondary)
  • Serve as a substitute for the SPECTRUM program
  • Participate and/or facilitate HVED internal meetings and workgroups as assigned
  • Participate in the regional ASD Community of Practice
  • Perform all other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Minnesota licensure in Special Education licensure preferred
  • Successful experience as a Special Education Teacher required 
  • Experience and knowledge of writing, monitoring, and implementing IEPs strongly preferred 
  • Experience in developing and implementing a variety of behavior strategies and interventions for effective programming
  • Maintain certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), training provided by the district  

Working Conditions:

  • Works in standard office and classroom setting
  • Uses standard office equipment such as computers, laptops, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Salary and Benefits:
$52,443 – $85,862 plus a competitive benefits package.  Compensation dependent on experience, education, certifications, and licensure.

Hiawatha Valley Education District (HVED) provides special education services to 12 School Districts and three Charter Schools within five counties of southeast Minnesota: Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona.
