Description

Provide leadership in the planning, development and implementation of the school bus route logistics of the School District and provide supervision to staff performing school bus route development and maintenance.

Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Report to the Transportation Director.
  • Exercises management and supervision over lower-level staff.

Responsibilities

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties: 

Supervision

  • Supervise Information Analyst staff, including interviewing, training, coaching, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Review and approve the assignment of routes to district contractors, including additional or modified routes as needed.
  • Ensure optimal use of the automated bus routing system by managing staff training, hardware requirements, and technical issues.

Logistic Management

  • Oversee the development of efficient and effective bus routes for regular and special education students, providing staff guidance as needed.
  • Review bus routes to ensure adherence to Board policies regarding walking distances for elementary and secondary students.
  • Monitor bus routes regularly for safety, student ridership, and traffic changes, making necessary adjustments with staff.
  • Conduct annual reviews of route structures to analyze ridership trends and recommend cost-saving adjustments based on student enrollment.
  • Coordinate the collection of information from special education programs and ensure accurate state aid reporting.

Leadership

  • Actively promote the Superintendent¿s goals and priorities while adhering to all policies and procedures.
  • Develop and implement student transportation eligibility procedures, verifying student addresses and providing policy guidance to coordinators.
  • Partner with the Student Placement Center to resolve transportation service questions for newly enrolled students.
  • Work with program directors and special education staff to plan routes for new programs, location changes, and extended day or summer programs.
  • Develop and present transportation program materials for district leadership, community stakeholders, and parents.
  • Investigate and respond to transportation complaints or concerns from parents, students, or staff, collaborating with relevant district departments to resolve issues.

Liaison

  • Coordinate with bus contractors to resolve route issues and ensure alignment with district policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Collaborate with IT staff to resolve technical issues and ensure accurate student data transfers between routing and student systems.
  • Serve as liaison to special education teams to ensure proper transportation services and monitor eligibility as students transition schools.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of school bus route planning, factoring in geography, traffic conditions, hazards, and infrastructure limitations.
  • Strong understanding of Minnesota laws, State Agency rules, and Board of Education policies related to student transportation.
  • Solid foundation in transportation safety protocols and operational practices.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems, including bus routing/planning software, word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
  • Skilled in planning, directing, and assessing team performance.
  • Effective leadership abilities with a collaborative approach to problem resolution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for engaging with individuals and groups.
  • Capable of managing high-pressure situations and handling multiple, complex projects concurrently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively manage interactions with upset or frustrated individuals.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation management, business or public administration or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of increasingly responsible work experience including the development and management of a complex bus route network.
  • And one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent combinations or education and/or work experience will be considered.

Pay, Benefits and Work Schedule:

Pay range for this position is:  $76,735 – $102,793

Maximum hiring step = step nine (9)

This is a 12 month position working 40 hours per week.
