Position Summary

The TOSA-Behavior position is part of a team that provides training, coaching, and support to special education teachers and staff focused on student behavioral and social-emotional needs to improve outcomes for students receiving services in special education. This position works with licensed staff to facilitate the implementation of consistent/comprehensive behavioral, social skills, and social emotional learning instruction for students receiving special education services. This position also works with licensed staff to ensure due process compliance procedures are followed.

 

Reporting Relationship

Reports to the Assistant Director of Special Education, Office of Specialized Services

Minimum Qualifications

  • A valid MN special education teaching license issued by the Minnesota Department of Education.
  • Three years of successful teaching experience in special education.
  • Three (3) years of experience in special education, or as a trainer/coach, program liaison, facilitating or providing educational staff support.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in special education, social work, school psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience in creating and providing professional development for teachers and staff.
  • Five or more years of experience in special education, or as a trainer/coach, program liaison, facilitating or providing educational staff support.
  • Experience with racial equity in a PreK-12 education setting that supports students from birth to age 22.

Responsibilities

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following fundamental duties:

  • Provide coaching/mentoring services to include delivering model teaching, mentoring, coaching, facilitation, direct observation, demonstration and consulting, and providing resources and support as needed to special education teachers and staff regarding student behavioral and social emotional learning.
  • Design specific professional development offerings to improve classroom management for the delivery of services and instruction to students receiving special education services and improve the achievement of students receiving special education services.
  • Work closely with other special education lead resource teachers and special education and regular education administration to design and deliver support on curriculum and classroom management strategies.
  • Use current, relevant, proven education research-based training strategies to coach/mentor staff.
  • Collaborate with staff to formulate procedures, planning, and programming that responds to the needs of staff and students receiving special education services.
  • Coordinate the evaluation of the mentor program effectiveness and report results to the Director of Special Education.
  • Attend all required training and meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned or needed.

  • Knowledge, skills and abilities in behavioral and social skills instruction, especially as it relates to supporting students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of special education due process procedures.
  • Knowledge of urban education.
  • Knowledge of barriers to learning.
  • Knowledge of district and community resources available to assist students and their families with resolving academic achievement and/or behavior challenges.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution theories and methods.
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
  • Excellent organizational, planning and coordination skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to interact effectively with persons from various cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain records, evaluate data and prepare recommendations.
  • Ability to work effectively, cooperatively with students. parents, school staff and administration.
  • Responsible work and attendance ethic. 

PAY, BENEFITS & WORK SCHEDULE
This is a 10 month position working 40 hours per week. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the SPFE – Teacher’s negotiated labor agreement. The salary schedule can be found on the Labor Agreements page.
