Substitute Bus Driver

Position Function:
Under the direct supervision of the Facilities & Transportation Specialist, transport students to and from school and school activities on a district owned school bus.  

Essential Functions:

  • Perform pre and post trip inspections.
  • Drive designated AM and PM routes on school days when needed. 
  • Supervise students while transporting them each day. 
  • Monitor and fuel up the school bus as needed.
  • Clean the bus each day or as needed.  

Additional Duties:              

  • Communicate as needed with the Facilities & Transportation Specialist.
  • Assist with driving some extracurricular trips.

Equipment

  • Must be licensed and trained to drive a public school bus.
  • Communicate clearly via two-way digital radio.

Safety Requirements

  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations pertaining to transporting students on a school bus.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear.
  • Implement routine safety inspections and bus evacuation drills. 
  • Participate in and pass required drug tests. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possession of a current MN Commercial Drivers License (Type B)
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to drive in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Ability to drive in difficult weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise students.
  • Ability to get on and off of a school bus frequently and facilitate bus evacuation drills.

Qualifications Profile:

  • High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Current MN Commercial Drivers License (Type B)
