Special Education Teacher-K-8
Aspire Academy is looking for creative and results-driven teachers who will be responsible for instructing students in elementary school from grades K-8. The goal-oriented special education teacher is responsible for supporting the academic and behavioral needs of Aspire Academy students who receive special education services and who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The Special Education Teacher will work alongside fellow teachers, social workers, psychologists and under the guidance of the Special Education Director. The candidate must be culturally responsive, instruct students on subjects such as science, reading, social studies, math, writing, and lab activities. Job Responsibilities
· Understand and support Aspire Academy’s mission and vision while promoting a positive image of the school
· Support the general education staff with implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
· Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans
· Ensure scholars are meeting academic goals and goals identified in Individualized Education Plans
· Train staff to implement individual behavior plans and interventions; monitor and provide feedback to staff re: effectiveness of behavior plan implementation.
· Utilize research-based best practices to create long-term and daily lesson plans to teach pro-social skills to scholars with identified ASD and other diagnosed support needs
· Provide individual and group support for social/emotional skill development
· Develop and implement behavior plans for scholars with ASD
· Serve as the case manager for a group of students receiving special education services
· Collaborate with classroom teachers and co-teach academic and social-emotional content as assigned
· Ensure that all relevant school personnel have up-to-date information on appropriate modifications and accommodations for all students in order to ensure their academic and social needs are being met in the classroom.
· Provide individual and group instruction in academic and pro-social skills for students with special needs
· Use data to adjust short- and long-term plans in order to meet students’ learning and behavioral development needs
· Assist in the initial and three- year re-evaluation of students to determine qualification and need for special education services including conducting achievements testing, data collection, observations, interviews, and completing functional behavior assessment
· Exercise open and respectful communication with families, co-workers, supervisors, and other school staff
· Measure progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required
· Manage student behavior in accordance with outlined guidelines
· Provide a safe, thriving, and respectful environment for all students in the classroom and on the school campus
· Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served
· Work closely with other members of the Special Education Team (teachers, social worker, paraprofessionals, administration) and general education staff to ensure high quality, compliant service is being provided for identified students
Skills Needed
· Ability to Coordinate IEP meetings, monitor and comply with all paperwork and service deadlines
· Training or willingness to be trained in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
· Knowledge of MN ASD criteria and the evaluation process including: conducting Functional Behavior Assessments; understanding the use of Positive Behavior Supports; knowledge of how to write a Behavior Intervention Plan
· Knowledge of Special Education law and due process compliance
· Ability to coordinate and participate on the Child Study Team by attending meetings and supporting with the implementation of interventions to meet the needs of struggling learners with or without special education needs
· Ability to write, implement, and track the goals for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
· Highly developed oral and written communication skills
· Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students
· Demonstration of continued professional development through coursework, action research, peer collaboration, and/or job-embedded staff development
· Prior success with diverse learners is desirable
· Experience developing and implementing curriculum while having the ability to integrate STEM into the daily schedule
· Physical ability to handle frequent sitting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and moving throughout the room
· Proven ability to maintain a safe and studious classroom environment
· Demonstrated ability to develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum
· Strong Google Apps for Education skills (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, etc.)
Qualifications/Experiences
· Minimum of Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
