Reports to:  Principal

Located in the beautiful Highland Park neighborhood, Urban Academy has been teaching students from across the Twin Cities for 20 years. In 2024, we were recognized by MDE as a high-quality charter school.

Teachers provide instruction in math, phonics, literacy, social studies and science with curriculum provided. Teachers work closely with our Title 1 and English language staff. 

At Urban Academy, classroom teachers receive active coaching and support from our Principal, Director of Academics and Reading Coach. Teachers will take part in a yearlong professional development science of reading training called LETRS. Opportunities may be available to coach middle school sports teams.”

1. Responsibilities with Students

Instruction: 

  • Plans instruction and other student support activities as follows:
    • Establishes curriculum plan, as applicable to the teacher’s particular assignment and consistent with District standards, objectives, needs and abilities of student, and is consistent with District and State curriculum and assessment
    • Reviews, selects, and modifies materials and resources to carry out the curriculum plan
    • Provides instruction to students in a manner, which incorporates best teaching practices
  • Develops daily lesson plans
  • Teaches to an outcome and selects objectives at the correct level of difficulty
  • Uses principles of learning in an appropriate manner
  • Develops instructional strategies to maximize student participation
  • Possesses current knowledge of support services and subjects taught
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the integration of subject and support services
  • Maintains professional competency in assigned subject areas

Assessment: 

  • Monitors student learning and adjusts teaching
  • Has knowledge of performance assessments, checklists, and rubrics and correct use there of
  • Uses student assessment and evaluation to assess student work to guide instruction, to evaluate student work to determine student progress and grades, to report student progress to student and parents and to identify and implement appropriate instructional strategies to meet the needs of learners

Classroom Management: 

  • Provides an honest, respectful, caring, and safe environment for students
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with students in the classroom, on school premises, and/or in school activities
  • Encourages student responsibility, cooperation, and respect for self, others and property
  • Helps students develop ability to prevent or solve conflicts
  • Has appropriate classroom management, human relations, questioning, and planning skills
  • Has skills in inclusivity, diversity and differentiated strategies
  • Has knowledge of child growth, development, and learning
  • Communicates expectations for appropriate behavior
  • Adheres to district policies, procedures and legal requirements

2. Responsibilities with Parents and Families

  • Communicates effectively with parents through conferences, written documents, telephone, and other forms of communications
  • Maintains records according to district policy and procedures
  • Maintains necessary records according to legal and District requirements and uses records to obtain and provide accurate information
  • Maintains confidentiality of information and other job related confidentiality of information 

3. Responsibilities with Colleagues

  • Maintains effective working relationships with staff and service providers to meet the needs of students 
  • Has the ability to work in teams on a collaborative basis
  • Collaborates with service providers regarding the needs of students
  • Communicates accurately and constructively while preserving confidentiality
  • Continually identifies professional development needs; plans and pursues strategies to meet those needs
