SPED Paraprofessional

Description

Purpose:
Assist professional school personnel in classrooms, educational programs, buses, lunchrooms, and other areas as needed.  The SPED Paraprofessional works under close supervision of a special education teacher, classroom teacher and SPED Director.
 
Responsibilities to Assist Teacher include:

  • Provide academic support to students in reading, language, spelling, mathematics, social studies, and other subjects as employed by the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining instructional materials such as books, flash cards, blocks, clocks, and rulers. 
  • Participate in the specialist program activities with students (ie. physical education, technology, library)
  • Perform other similar tasks and duties as required

 
One on One Responsibility

  • Assist and monitor student behavior and academic needs in the classroom and out of the classroom as instructed by the students IEP. 
  • Maintain full support to the child during the regular instructional day as indicated in the child’s IEP.

 

  • If the child is absent from school:  paraprofessional will support in the area of Special Education to supplement instructional activities or to provide extended practice under the direction of the Special Education teacher.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet the Highly Qualified certification requirements (ie. minimum of 2 year degree, preferably in a related field)
  • Three (3) years of Paraprofessional experience
  • Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Basic skills in typing and duplicating may be required for some positions
  • Ability to develop good relationships with students, parents and staff
  • Ability to be sensitive to the needs of others
  • Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding
  • Ability to work with special educational students
  • Must be on time to your job everyday
