The Paraprofessional provides assistance both to teachers and students in learning lesson plans. He/she may also work in specialized programs or on an individual basis with students and/or families requiring close supervision and special assistance. The Paraprofessional provides support, explanation, re-teaching, and discipline.Â
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Guides and works through lesson plans with students by correcting tasks, interpreting class assignments, reinforcing as necessary, and recording and charting results as established by the Special Ed. Teacher. Monitors tests and informal quizzes and checks understanding to assess Special Ed. students’ mastery of learned materials.
- Instructs and assists students in getting to classes and/or job sites; during meals, showers, and bathroom training; or other activities planned for the students’ day.
- Monitors behavior of students for appropriateness and need for discipline and positive reinforcement, including when an instructor is not present or when off-site.
- Recommends ideas, identifies problems or aids in problem solving to teachers and/or students.
- Assists mainstream teachers in classroom by following lesson plans and assisting in projects/assignments. Prepares and/or assembles materials for projects, games, bulletin boards or as assigned.
- Types, utilizes computers as directed by teachers, files, and requests items needed by staff and students for classrooms, meetings, presentations or conferences.
- Assists teacher in carrying out students’ Individualized Educational Plans.
- Where identified in the Individualized Educational Plan, provides work skill training and job-coaching at the job site.
- Other duties as assigned.Â
Job Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent. Associates degree in Education or related field preferred.
- Prior experience as a paraprofessional preferred.
- Experience working with students with special needs preferred.
- Knowledge of practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching.
- Must have understanding of classroom subject matter and teaching methods.
- Experience using office equipment and computer hardware/software.
- Ability to use standard classroom equipment and technology and learn specialized equipment and software related to student group assigned.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, parents, students and associates.
- Must be able to stand and walk for continuous periods of time.
- Must able to lift up to 50 lbs.
