Job Overview:
Watertown Mayer High School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Paraprofessional to join our high school team. This role is crucial in supporting students with special needs, providing academic, behavioral, and social assistance under the guidance of a special education teacher. The ideal candidate will have a passion for working with students, strong communication skills, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the special education teacher in implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students.
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special needs in both general education and special education settings.
- Support students in academic tasks, including reading, writing, mathematics, and other classroom activities.
- Help manage and address behavioral challenges by implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports.
- Facilitate social interactions and encourage peer relationships among students.
- Assist with classroom organization and preparation of materials to meet student needs.
- Monitor and document student progress, reporting observations to the special education teacher.
- Supervise students during transitions, breaks, and other non-instructional times.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other staff members to support student success.
- Attend and participate in team meetings, professional development sessions, and training as required.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); associate’s degree or higher in education or a related field (preferred).
- Highly qualified status required.
- Previous experience working with children or adolescents, especially in an educational or special needs setting (preferred).
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting students with diverse needs.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move up to [insert weight limit] pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
- Ability to assist students with physical needs, including mobility assistance if necessary.
