School Social Worker

Description

The School Social Worker will serve as a link between a student's home, school and community.  The social worker will serve as a member of the Special Education team as well as a provider for students in general education.  The overall goal will be to increase students’ academic success and maximize their educational opportunities by empowering them with community resources and preventative and supportive services.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Overall, the service provider will work to advocate for youth by providing services that include:

*Individual and group counseling for general and special education
*Support groups or workshops for both students and parents (i.e. serve as a Parent Involvement Coordinator)
*Crisis prevention, intervention, and conflict resolution
* Participation in meetings within school or home visits when needed
*Conduct transition and family interviews for Special Education 
*Outreach to community agencies that prevent barriers and empower students
*Engaging students in serving the community and building personal strengths (i.e. serve as a Mentorship Coordinator)
*Guide students to access resources that will meet their basic and/or emotional needs
* Facilitate staff development trainings when needed
*Participate in staff meetings and trainings
*Consult with general and special education staff
* Work with homeless students to help find places to stay
* Help with the medication for students
*Update Medical Needs Folder

Skills and abilities

The service provider will possess the following abilities:
*Licensed/ working to become licensed
* Experience and understanding diverse populations and using cross-cultural approaches 
*Possess skills in serving at risk, urban youth
*Ability to communicate effectively orally and through writing
*Knowledge and access of community resources
*Possess strong boundaries and practice good ethics
*Ability to multitask
*Possess crisis management skills
