SCHOOL PATROL LIAISON

 

GENERAL DEFINITION

 

This is part-time supervisory level work ensuring the activities of School Crossing Guards are carried out directing traffic at an assigned intersection to afford maximum protection to children going to and returning from school. Employees in this class monitor coverage at designated intersections and participate in guard activities. Contact with the general public and communicating effectively with subordinates, other City agencies and City officials are significant aspects of the work.  Work requires standing for long periods of time, extended hand and arm movements and exposure to inclement weather.  The employee reports to an administrative superior.

 

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)

 

Assigns, monitors and ensures work is completed properly, and participates in the work of school crossing guards; tours area to check progress of crossing guards for compliance with work orders and established routines; frequently offers instructions and guidance to crossing guards during assignment; makes adjustments in assignment of employees as necessary; approves leave requests; coaches staff to achieve performance objectives; evaluates performance of staff and completes performance reports; participates in onboarding and training crossing guards in the field.

 

Serves as liaison between department and representatives of local schools; answers inquiries and gives direction to the public; investigates complaints.

 

Performs work as assigned directing traffic at intersections to cover for unexpected absences.

         

Performs related work as required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES KNOWLEDGE OF: 

  •         safety and security principles and practices.
  •         City of Duluth motor vehicle regulations
  •         geographic layout of the City of Duluth, specifically the Bay View Neighborhood
  •         supervisory methods and techniques 

SKILL IN: 

  •         verbal communication
  •         resolving routine problems associated with guard activities

EDUCATION:

 

Education equivalent to a minimum of a GED or higher.

 

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

General knowledge of the Crossing Guard program.

 

PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position in this class.

 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES:

Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Minnesota Department of Transportation prior to appointment.

 

District policy requires a criminal history background check as a condition of employment 

 

NOTE: If the criminal background checks reveal the existence of a potentially disqualifying offense, additional documentation will be required by Proctor Public Schools to determine eligibility for appointment to the position.
