Description
School Counselor
Hiawatha Valley Education District’s (HVED) School Counselor will provide support services to current and prospective students. Â
Qualifications:Â
- Master’s degree in counseling; or
- Bachelor’s degree and enrolled in an accredited school counselor program with no less than 24 semester credit hours in school-counseling-specific coursework or content, including introduction to the field, counseling skills, and ethical standards and must verify to the board in writing a plan of study of full- or part-time enrollment to achieve licensure within three years
- Current School Counselor license
- Demonstrated understanding of cultural competence
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):Â Â
- Develops and implements behavioral and crisis interventions; administers and analyzes student needs assessments; conducts interviews with students, family, and school staff; conducts observations; creates related plans of action to meet the individual needs of students; collaborates with staff, families, outside agencies, and others in the management and support of interventions.Â
- Plans and conducts individualized or small group sessions with students to develop, teach, and implement social/emotional support tools; discuss prevention, problem solving techniques, academics, peer relations, and issues creating barriers for their academic success; and reviews progress.Â
- ?Evaluates and makes referrals to outside providers, community resources, social services, and other programs; and collaborates and communicates with school staff, students, families, and outside resources.Â
- ?Collaborates with social services, teachers, staff, administration, and related service providers; and educates and trains staff on related topics including trauma informed strategies.Â
- ?Prepares documentation, reports and/or other correspondence including assessments, evaluation reports, progress reports, and other related paperwork, and ensures compliance with applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.Â
- ?Other duties as assigned
Equipment:Â
Uses standard office equipment such as computer/laptop, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.Â
Travel Requirements:Â
Travel to member districts and the HVED District Office as needed
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards:Â
Works in school building environments and office setting. Â

Hiawatha Valley Education District (HVED) provides special education services to 12 School Districts and three Charter Schools within five counties of southeast Minnesota: Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Wabasha, and Winona. HVED also has a Setting IV Behavior Program, Students Achieving Integrated Services (SAIL) that provides programming for students in grades K-12 with challenging behaviors currently receiving special education services. Along with the SAIL programs, HVED provides programming for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a program named for Specialized Programming, Education, Comprehensive Therapy and other Resources for their Unique Minds (SPECTRUM).
