Position: Transportation Mechanic

Schedule:  Monday – Friday 10:00am – 6:30pm

Primary Function:  Responsible for performing repairs and maintenance functions on all district transportation vehicles and ensuring all vehicles are in safe operating condition. 
  
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of one year experience performing vehicle maintenance and repairs in a transportation services environment
  • Trained in performing school bus repairs including brakes, tune-up, drive train, propane, gas, and diesel engines and all other repair duties necessary to maintain a school bus fleet
  • Must be eligible to obtain school bus license 
  • Positive interpersonal communication and relationship building skills
  • Ability to regularly lift 40 pounds
  • Ability to perform routine computer functions, including the use of email and Microsoft Word
  • Prompt, regular and reliable attendance
  • Previous experience in a School District Transportation Facility desired.

 
Essential Functions:

  • Service and inspect all district vehicles according to Transportation Department guidelines as directed.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on vehicles as directed.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose vehicle problems.
  •  Assist in the control of inventory of parts, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in keeping the service area clean and free of fire, fire hazards and dangerous working conditions as directed.
  • Assist in the security of propane, gasoline and diesel tanks and supplies.
  • Keeps up to date on changes and requirements of servicing a school bus fleet.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed on each vehicle.
  • Substitute as a bus driver as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 
Physical Requirements:
       
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and lifting, frequently requires walking ,speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motion and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging idea by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud location (e.g. grounds, maintenance, heavy traffic).
