Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Manager of Buildings and Grounds and the guidance of District Lead Custodian, the Custodian performs general cleaning within assigned areas, hallways, restrooms, gyms, and school areas in accordance with cleaning schedules and work assignments in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.  The Custodian assists building personnel in the loading and unloading of district materials, food items and deliveries; relocation of desks, chairs, equipment during building moves; and providing support services for day and evening school activities within Columbia Heights Schools. Responsible for maintaining facility grounds, athletic fields, parking lots, and playgrounds of Columbia Heights Schools.  Duties and responsibilities also include removing snow and ice; caring for district lawns, preparing athletic fields for sporting events; and maintaining district grounds equipment. Custodians may assist skilled maintenance technicians or personnel in the conduct of skilled maintenance repairs or can be expected to perform routine and unskilled repairs or scheduled maintenance tasks within the building of assignment.
 
Qualifications:  

  •  High School Diploma or GED required.
  •  Must obtain a special class boilers license within six (6) months from the date of employment.
  •  2nd Class Boilers License, preferred.

 

General Definition of Work
Performs manual work cleaning and maintaining school building interiors, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Manager – Buildings and Grounds.

Essential Functions

  • Sweeps, strips, buffs, waxes or dust mops assigned areas; cleans carpet.
  • Empties trash receptacles; removes trash from buildings.
  • Dusts furniture, walls, windowsills and other woodwork; cleans windows.
  • Sanitizes and cleans drinking fountains and other high use surfaces.
  • Cleanses spills and sanitizes areas.
  • Cleans lockers, walls and other areas; removes graffiti.
  • Changes light bulbs and ballasts.
  • Opens and secures building.
  • Performs systematic cleaning of facilities.
  • Sets up and removes bleachers, chairs, desks or other equipment for various functions and/or events.

 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; general knowledge of material safety data sheets; some knowledge of heating and cooling systems; skill reading assembly diagrams and material safety data sheets; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to read and understand basic English direction; ability to work in a fairly independent environment with little or no supervision; ability to work with a varied group of people coming from different backgrounds; ability to be thorough and clean when working; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and other community members.
 
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work requires close vision and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to the risk of electrical shock, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
 
Special Requirements

  • Class C, Low Pressure, Special Grade Boilers License within six (6) months of hire.
  • Experience working in a multi cultural setting and with diverse groups of people preferred.
  • Alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable will also be considered.
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of Minnesota.
