Position Title: Media Specialist

Location: High School

Job Summary:

The Media Center Specialist provides essential services and resources to students and staff, including facilitating access to print and digital materials, supporting digital literacy, and ensuring the media center is well-maintained and effectively utilized. The role involves maintaining the library collection, assisting with technology, and creating an inviting learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Media Center Operations:

    • Supervise online classes and student activities in the Media Center and adjacent spaces.

    • Access the needs for incoming research projects and make appropriate materials available.

    • Determine additions to the collection of books and audio-visual materials and withdraw outdated or damaged items.

    • Catalog and process books and materials for the library inventory.

    • Administer, utilize, and update Destiny online sites, including managing student data and inventories.

    • Coordinate with elementary media specialist regarding the renewal of Follet Destiny support/Titlewave.

  • Inventory & Budget Management:

    • Maintain accurate inventories of print, non-print, and technology materials and equipment.

    • Generate purchase requisitions using Region 1 Smart Finance for Media Center materials, ensuring expenditures stay within the allowed budget.

    • Inventory supplies, software, and hardware for the next fiscal year’s purchases.

  • Technical & Equipment Support:

    • Provide support for equipment maintenance, including determining whether to acquire new items, discard or repair outdated equipment.

    • Maintain copiers, including ink replacement and troubleshooting issues.

    • Assist teachers with setting up Renaissance Place for STAR testing, and maintaining student and staff data.

    • Provide copier support and technical assistance for teachers with student passwords and other issues.

  • Instruction & Collaboration:

    • Plan and work collaboratively with teachers to support curriculum through media resources.

    • Assist staff and students in using the media collection, online catalog, and library workstations.

    • Offer guidance on using student Chromebooks, applications, and library software.

    • Provide training and support to staff and students on media center resources. 

    • Promote adherence to copyright laws and district policies, offering guidance on digital citizenship and internet safety.

  • Customer Service & Communication:

    • Provide efficient, friendly customer service to all patrons in person, by phone, and via email.

    • Prepare and process overdue and lost book notifications, sending receipts and follow-ups to parents via mail or email.

    • Assist with coordinating student devices, ensuring proper check-out and check-in processes.

  • Environment & Maintenance:

    • Maintain an attractive, organized media center environment that encourages use by students and staff.

    • Perform general housekeeping duties to keep the media center and adjacent spaces clean and inviting.

    • Promote the use of media center resources. 

  • Other Duties:

    • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the principal to support the smooth operation of the Media Center.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and provide positive, efficient service to all patrons.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations of students.

  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Knowledge of basic online research resources commonly used in educational settings.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing the library collection, patron records, and circulation statistics.

  • Innovative and open to exploring new trends in media center technologies and usage.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

  • A certificate, Associate’s, or Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

  • Experience working with students, particularly in educational or recreational settings, is preferred.

  • Experience in a school, library, customer service, or public service role is preferred.

??Hours:

  • School year: 7.25 hours per day (7:45 – 3:30 following school calendar)
  • Summer Days: 6 hours per day (5 days to be coordinated with Principal)

 Salary and Benefits: 

  • Salary and Benefits will be in accordance with the MSEA contract which can befound on the website under employment opportunities/master agreements.  
  • Band and Grade: B23  (Salary Range: $18.50  to $19.75 per hour depending on experience)
