   Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and the following:

  • Currently licensed as a Professional Registered Nurse by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
  • Currently certified as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
  • Currently licensed as a Public School Nurse by the Minnesota Department of Education (if not currently licensed, will be required to obtain license.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a school setting.
  • Experience working as a nurse in either a Public Health or Pediatric setting.

   Responsibilities

   The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:

Health Services

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate through the nursing process the physical and mental health and developmental status of the preschool and school-aged child.
  • Determine the health status of the student through vision testing, hearing testing, and physical examinations.
  • Provide for the administration of medications and treatments necessary for students to remain in school during the school day.
  • Promote the optimal health and well-being of students, families, and school personnel through health counseling.
  • Administer immunizations in some settings.
  • Develop and implement the health component of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) for students with disabilities or handicapping conditions affecting the student¿s education.
  • Develop and implement the health component of the Individual Health Plan (IHP) and the Emergency Care Plan (ECP) for students with disabilities or handicapping conditions that require accommodations to attend school.
  • Case manages the health care of students who have chronic health conditions while they are at school.
  • Survey, report, and assist in the prevention and control of communicable disease in students.
  • Develop and maintain a system of first aid and emergency care.
  • Assess and recommend school safety measures and promote a healthy school environment.
  • Provide consultation, assist in locating resource materials, and assist in the instruction of students in health education.
  • Work cooperatively with the faculty and staff of the building in the provision of health service to all students.
  • Refer students and families to appropriate community resources to respond to students’ health needs.

Pupil Personnel Services

  • Collaborate with the Child Study Team in assessing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Collaborate with the pupil problems committee in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating effective programs for students with unique problems.
  • Collaborate with the child abuse team to efficiently and effectively assess and report possible child abuse, neglect, and/or sexual abuse.
  • Collaborate with the Section 504 committee to develop an Individual Health Plan (IHP) for students who need accommodation to remain in school.

Parent and Community Relations

  • Provide health information and education through school newsletters and informational memoranda.
  • Collaborate with public and private health care providers to improve services to students.

Mandated Services

  • In response to Minnesota Statute 121A.15, review annually the immunization status of students, maintain records of their immunizations, recommend to the Saint Paul Board of Education exclusion of students in non-compliance, and report annually to the state departments of education and health.
  • Establish and maintain a Pupil Health Record (PHR, H-5) as defined in Minnesota Statute 144.29 that contains the health status of the student, a record of immunizations, growth, vision, and hearing findings, and a chronological history of physical and mental health problems or conditions that may affect the education of the student.
  • Report suspected communicable diseases to the Saint Paul-Ramsey County Public Health as required by Minnesota Code of Agency Rule 4605.7000 to 7900.
  • Report suspected cases of child abuse as required by Minnesota Statue 626.556 to the police and the area superintendent.
  • Implement the Saint Paul Board of Education policies relating to health such as Administration of Medications, Child Abuse, Public Use of School Records, Immunizations, and Accidents/First Aid.
  • Maintain the data privacy of all individual physical, emotional, and social issues of students and staff and act as the primary data privacy keeper of the Pupil Health Record (PHR, H-5) as required by Minnesota Government Data Privacy Act MS 13.01-43.

Supplies and Equipment

  • Inventory and order first aid supplies, health forms, and equipment from the Student Health and Wellness office.  (See Chapter 14, Section 1 and 2)
  • Identify and return to the Student Health and Wellness office equipment in need of repair.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Input the immunizations and health appraisals of students into Campus.
  • Maintain a current record of students with health conditions and problems on Campus.
  • Maintain statistical information about suspected communicable diseases (H-20) and follow-up of referrals that have not been completed (H-71).
  • Establish and maintain a chronological sequential health history record as part of the Pupil Health Record (PHR, H-5).
  • Maintain an individual data information system for students.
  • Comply with established billing system(s) for health care services provided to students.
  • Contribute to the District’s Strong Schools, Strong Communities efforts by partnering with other staff to contribute to student achievement and the alignment and sustainability of resources.

Perform other related duties as assigned by the Student Health and Wellness administrator or the building administrator.

   General Information

   Saint Paul Public Schools is accepting applications for the Licensed School Nurse pool for the 2024-2025 school year.  The Human Resource Department utilizes the pool posting as needed throughout the year to recruit a sufficient pool of candidates for a specific licensure area.  Specific openings for the upcoming school year are not known at this time.

The Human Resource Department will review your qualifications and may contact you for an interview.  Candidates who are interviewed and selected for the candidate pool may be considered for vacancies throughout the district as they occur.  Schools that have vacancies utilize the pool to conduct second interviews and make hiring decisions.

Candidates selected for the pool may remain in the pool for a minimum of one year. If you are licensed in multiple subject areas, you should indicate the requisition (job) numbers for other pools which are posted and for which you wish to be considered.

The pool is intended to recruit new teachers.  Current teachers in St. Paul who wish to be considered for vacancies should apply for positions through the District’s voluntary transfer process.

Student Health and Wellness provides nursing services to students to enhance educational achievement by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning.  The goal of the program is to assist students to be self-sufficient in managing their health care within age appropriate expectations thereby preparing all students for life.

The person in this position will enhance the educational process by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimal level of wellness.

Reporting Relationships

The person in this position is responsible to the Student Health and Wellness administrator in matters of nursing practice and health standards, and to the building administrator in matters of school building administration.

   This is a 10 month position working 40 hours per week.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Teacher negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at https://www.spps.org/Page/33566. The minimum rate of pay for this position is $48,181 annually.

   Transcript – Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire.  You must submit official transcripts within 30 days of your start date.  Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.

Veteran’s Preference – If you are an eligible veteran applying for a job where veteran’s preference applies and wish to claim Veterans Preference you must submit a legible copy of your DD214 to the Human Resource Department with your employment application.
