Job Description

Job Summary
The Library Media Specialist is responsible for planning, administering, and implementing the operations, procedures, and routines of the JWP Media Center. While specific duties and responsibilities may vary, the Library Media Specialist performs such tasks as: managing and purchasing the collection of library materials, technology, and equipment; teaching media literacy in print, digital, and multimedia formats; collaborating with instructional staff in locating online and digital resources, books, and materials to support the curriculum and/or co-teaching/collaborating on special student projects; coordinating and/or participating in the cataloging, classifying, and circulation of media materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaches media literacy skills to support the language arts standards and tailors resources to support the inquiry process during resarch projects
  • Encourages creativity and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
  • Provides instruction and support in research and fluency development skills
  • Collaborates and works closely with instuctional personnel regarding ideas/resources for specific curriculum areas
  • Collaborates with instructional staff by supporting teachers and students in curriculum areas, on projects, and in the use of resources
  • Helps in developing book list, ideas, and genre support for language arts
  • Creates samples and generates directions for student guides on projects
  • Formulates and plans materials to support lesson plans
  • Selects, orders, and systematically catalogs and organizes all media center materials and items
  • Provides direction to media assistants or library volunteers
  • Monitors media user needs, usage, and trends to better structure and program needs
  • Researches and develops online and digital resources for staff and student use
  • Develops the print and non-print collections based on curriculum and learner needs that are also in alignment with district policy
  • Reviews and removes obsolete or outdated materials from the media collection
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Planning and teaching students consistent with approved curriculum in the areas of media literacy and library science
  • Developing media service procedures and media systems
  • Presenting complex materials and concepts in an understandable and grade-appropriate manner concerning library/media skills curriculum and information
  • Organizing, evaluating, developing, acquiring, and maintaining library print and non-print collections and information
  • Operating library management system and records
  • Delegating and monitoring the activities of media center personnel and students
  • Applying and interpreting district policies and library procedures pertaining to discipline, student management, and library policies
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with staff, students, and the public
  • Preparing and making presentations to groups and individuals
  • Organization of media center equipment, resources, catalogs, and student information
  • Basic math skills needed to maintain a budget
  • Promoting and planning special events/programs
  • Writing grants to enhance media center resources
  • Performing research and utilizing information resources

Education/Certification Requirements

  • Media Center Specialist Licensure is preferred

Experience Requirements

  • Experience in library management (preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in a school setting (preferred)

  • The full salary scale for this position can be found in the Master Agreement posted on our website (isd2835.org).
