The Perpich Center for Arts Education (PCAE) was created by statute in 1985. The center/agency is dedicated to improving K-12 arts education for all Minnesota students and educators through innovative programs and partnerships centered on the arts. A 30-acre campus in Golden Valley houses the Center’s three main components: The Professional Development and Research Group (PDR), the Arts High School (AHS), and the PCAE Library. PCAE serves as the premier source for arts education in Minnesota and is nationally recognized for its rigorous arts and academic programs.

Job Summary
The PCAE Board of Directors is seeking an Interim Director to lead the Perpich Center from on or about November 22, 2024, to on or about July 1, 2025. The ending date will depend on the final retention of a permanent Executive Director. The final Executive Director description will be posted in January or February 2025 for that person to start in the 2025-2026 academic school year, or sooner if desired. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is looking for a statewide academic position that is in a lively, interesting, goal-oriented environment.

The Executive Director, working with the Board of Directors, management team, and staff, provides leadership and direction in matters of policy, personnel, budgeting, growth, and change for the agency. The Executive Director is appointed by the PCAE Board of Directors, who are appointed by the governor. The Executive Director, reporting to the Board of Directors, maintains a close working relationship with the Board in carrying out its policies and directions. The Executive Director must work closely with all external and internal stakeholders, the governor, the legislature, the relevant state offices, and artists and educators statewide.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Hold a State of Minnesota Superintendent license.
  • Excellent leadership, human relations, communication skills, interpersonal communication skills, and public speaking with diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated managerial ability (including oversight of budgets and staff).
  • A completed master’s degree in educational leadership, arts education, or a related field.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in educational administration.
  • Cultural Competency: recognizes, respects, and considers the differing origins, customs, values, beliefs, history, and practices (“culture”) of others when performing managerial duties.
  • Human relations skills are sufficient to effectively persuade stakeholders, negotiate complex and competing issues, and understand, develop, motivate, collaborate with, and lead others.
  • Knowledge of theories and practices of management and leadership sufficient to direct human and fiscal resources so that program objectives are achieved.
  • Conflict management skills to analyze and resolve ambiguous or controversial situations and make difficult decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in an art school environment.
  • Knowledge of government financial policies and practices sufficient to prepare or direct preparation of, review, and analyze budgets and fiscal reports.
  • Knowledge of the state legislative process; public policy-making processes; and state government structure and functions.
  • A completed doctoral degree in educational leadership, arts education, or a related field; and experience directing an institution with relevance to K-12 art education issues.
