Title:        Health Services Assistant 

REPORTS TO:    District Nurse

CLASS SUMMARY:     The Health Services Assistant assists with students’ daily routine health care, medications, treatments, episodic and first aid care and assists in managing the school’s Health Services Office, under the supervision of the District/Building Nurse. Collects and maintains health information on electronic health records while maintaining data privacy and confidentiality. 

 

TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Assist LSN or RN in providing  more individualized and potentially complex medical cares to student(s), dependent upon training

  • Triage, screen, evaluate, and administer First Aid to injured students and staff

  • Support student(s) medical needs in classrooms settings and field trips

  • Assist in managing the school’s Health Services Office

  • Maintain confidentiality in all areas related to students

  • Collaborate with parents, staff, and LSN or RN as needed to ensure student safety and continuity of care

  • Administer medications according to district policy and procedures as delegated by the LSN or RN

  • Dispense medication and assist in providing treatment as prescribed or delegated by the LSN or RN. This may include diabetic cares, head lice checks, oral or nasal suctioning, tube feeding, checking blood pressure, catheterization, auscultation, and otoscopic exams (training will be required and provided)

  • Follow Emergency Care Plans and Individualized Student Care Plans written by LSN

  • Accurately complete/maintain a variety of records, including services to students with IEPs

  • Report students with repeated symptoms/problems/incidents of communicable disease to supervisor

  • Assist in obtaining required verification of immunizations

  • Attends required district, building, or nursing meetings and trainings

  • May assist with providing more individualized and potentially complex medical cares to student(s), dependent upon training

  • Other duties as assigned

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: (positions in this class typically require):

  • Current CPR/ First Aid Certification

  • CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)

 

KNOWLEDGE: (position requirements at entry):

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Experience working with students with medical needs

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Clerical and computer experience

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, crouching,

reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping,

hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10

pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to

move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of

forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the

time, the job is rated for Light Work.
