Description: Head Coach – Speech

Job Summary:  Responsible for the overall supervision of the speech activity program. 
 
Qualifications:

  • Valid Minnesota coaching certificate or
    • meet a 60 clock-hour equivalency. 
      • The MSHSL serves its member schools by providing the MN Head Coaches Course to help coaches meet this requirement.
      • This course is a seven hour in-person course and requires additional on-line requirements to meet 60 clock-hours of instruction.
  • Fulfills the following criteria:
    • Strong work ethic and dedication to furthering the benefits of participation in co-curricular activities.
    • Leadership skills including but not limited to organization, vision, motivation, and conflict resolution.  Ability to work with student athletes, parents, staff, and community.   
    • Can verify substantial knowledge of the rules and technical aspects of cheerleading; and
    • Can verify substantial knowledge of Minnesota High School League rules.
  • Ability to lift and move around objects weighting 10+ pounds regularly.
  • A strong background in speech as a participant and/or coach is preferred.

Responsible to:

  • The Activities Director, who provides overall objectives in conjunction with the High School Principal

Supervises:       

  • The athletes in his/her activity in grades 7-12 in conjunction with the Athletic Director, and respective Principal

Duties and Responsibilities:
1.       To actively coach at the varsity level and junior varsity level.
2.       To start and end the season in accordance with the rules of the Minnesota State High School League or local rule modifications.
3.       Has thorough knowledge of the Athletic Policies of the District and is responsible for their implementation of the sports program.
4.       Has knowledge of existing state and league regulations.

Staff Responsibilities:
1.       Follows the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.  
2.       Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
3.       Performs such other duties as assigned by the Activities Director.

Administrative Duties:
1.       Leads the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sporting event or practice and adheres to scheduled facility time. 
2.       Makes sure all participants have proper forms turned into the athletic office before they begin practice.
3.       Leads recommendations towards new policy, method or procedural change.
4.       Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of team equipment.

Student Responsibilities:
1.       Provides training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant.
2.       Gives constant attention to a student’s grades and conduct.
3.       By his/her presence at all games, practices and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
4.       Follows programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
5.       Completes paperwork on all athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours (or Monday following Friday or Saturday contests).
6.       Directs student managers.

Finance, Equipment and Facilities:
1.       Permits athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
2.       Examines locker room before and after practice and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility.  Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
3.       Secure all doors and lights before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
4.       Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and use.
5.       Ensure proper set-up and upkeep of sports facilities.
6.       Maintains neat and orderly storage areas.

Public Relations:
1.       Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes that are not in another sports program and promotes the sport outside the school through news  media, Sports Boosters, or in any other feasible manner.
2.       Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, Booster Club, officials, parents, community, volunteers and fans.

Additional Responsibilities:
1.       Attend MSHSL rules interpretation meetings.
2.       Hold preseason parent/athlete meeting. 
3.       Attend annual coaches meetings and training. 
4.       Hold end of season awards banquet.
