General Information 

This position is for a classroom American Sign Language Interpreter. 

Minimum qualifications

Qualified candidates must have have completed a formal Interpreter Training Program (ITP) affiliated with an accredited educational institution AND obtain or maintain interpreter certification in compliance with Minnesota¿s Educational Interpreter QA Law, including current interpreter/ transliterator certification through Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a comparable state certification recognized by the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education, such as the EIPA. 

New graduates of an interpreter/transliterator program affiliated with an accredited educational institution will be considered if granted a two-year provisional certificate by the State of Minnesota Education Commissioner.  During the two-year provisional period, the interpreter/transliterator must develop and implement an education plan in collaboration with a mentor and obtain the required certifications under the provisions of Minnesota Statutes 122A.31, Subdivision 1, relating to American Sign Language/English Interpreters.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate proficiency in multiple communication techniques with deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Ability to explain and defend the use of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or the National Association of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to relate well to students and co-workers
  • Ability to articulate basic information regarding communication methods, types of hearing losses, and the sociology of the deaf community.
  • Ability to articulate the differences inherent to interpreting in an educational setting as compared with other types of interpreter tasks and settings.

Responsibilities

The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties: 

  • Interpret for deaf students in a variety of situations, facilitating communication and access among instructors, deaf students, hearing students, and other staff.
  • Interpret for deaf students and deaf staff in any school program activities including, but not limited to, school meetings, club meetings, job interviews, on-the-job training, support groups, phone calls, special classes, workshops and conferences.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by analyzing and rehearsing vocabulary and content related to varied courses.
  • Tutor and take notes for deaf students, as directed by licensed staff at the Deaf/Hard of Hearing specialized site.
  • May be assigned to attend staff meetings and/or other meetings related to students or the program.
  • Collaborate and communicate with team members to support students¿ access, language, and learning needs.
  • Participate in IEP meetings as a team member, when requested.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, excluding personal cares.
  • May be required to complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and subsequent refresher courses.

Minimum qualifications:
One of the following:
-An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, or
-Two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education which are applicable toward a bachelors degree, or
-Passing score on the ParaPro or Paraeducator Assessment AND either a high school diploma or a GED certificate.  (For more information on the ParaPro Assessment, contact Educational Testing Service at 1-800-772-9476 or www.ets.org/parapro)

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
-Basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
-Basic skills in typing and duplicating may be required for some positions.
-Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
-Ability to be sensitive to the needs of others.
-Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness and understanding.
-Lifting may be required for some Teaching Assistant positions.
-Must be on time to the job every day.
