EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT 2/ INTERPRETER FOR THE DEAF
General Information
This position is for an educational American Sign Language Interpreter. This specific position is a float assignment responsible for providing interpreter services to students at three center-based programs. Schedule is determined by program lead and administrator; daily start time varies based on location.
Minimum qualifications
Qualified candidates must have completed a formal Interpreter Training Program (ITP) affiliated with an accredited educational institution AND obtain or maintain interpreter certification in compliance with Minnesota¿s Educational Interpreter QA Law, including current interpreter/transliterator certification through Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or a comparable state certification recognized by the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education, such as the EIPA.
New graduates of an interpreter/transliterator program affiliated with an accredited educational institution will be considered if granted a two-year provisional certificate by the State of Minnesota Education Commissioner. During the two-year provisional period, the interpreter/transliterator must develop and implement an education plan in collaboration with a mentor and obtain the required certifications under the provisions of Minnesota Statutes 122A.31, Subdivision 1, relating to American Sign Language/English Interpreters. Mentoring must occur once every 7 days.
Responsibilities
¿Deaf¿ is shall be used inclusively to refer to all students with hearing loss in need of ASL interpreting services, including D/deaf, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, deaf/disabled, and DeafPlus students. The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:
Interpreting for Deaf students in a variety of situations, facilitating communication and access among instructors, Deaf students, hearing students, and other staff.
Interpreting for deaf students and deaf staff in any school program activities including, but not limited to, school meetings, club meetings, job interviews, on- the-job training, travel instruction, field trips, work-based learning sites, support groups, phone calls, special classes, workshops and conferences.
Preparing for interpreting assignments by analyzing and rehearsing vocabulary and content related to varied courses.
Tutoring and taking notes for deaf students, as directed by licensed deaf/hard of hearing staff at the Deaf/Hard of Hearing specialized site.
Attending staff meetings and/or other meetings related to students or the program.
Collaborating and communicating with team members to support students¿ access, language, and learning needs.
Participating in IEP meetings as a team member, when requested.
Performing other related duties as assigned, excluding personal cares.
May be required to complete Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and subsequent refresher courses.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in multiple communication techniques with deaf and hard of hearing students.
Ability to explain and defend the use of the Code of Professional Conduct of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or the National Association of the Deaf Code of Ethics.
Ability to relate well to students and co-workers.
Ability to articulate basic information regarding communication methods, types of hearing losses, and the sociology of the deaf community.
Ability to articulate the differences inherent to interpreting in an educational setting as compared with other types of interpreter tasks and settings.
Ability to adapt interpreting style, language, and mode to best fit needs of students.
Ability to maintain professional and ethical boundaries aligned with the interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.
PAY, BENEFITS & WORK SCHEDULE
This is a 10 month position working 37.5 hours per week.

Transcript – Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire. You must submit official transcripts within 30 days of your start date. Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.
