GENERAL INFORMATION
Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is looking to hire a full-time EA 1 – Spec Ed – Voc Serv 10 Mo for our Journey’s Secondary School in St. Paul, MN. We are aiming to fill this role in 2 – 4 weeks. Employees could be eligible for Medical/Dental/Vision/Pension and accrue sick and vacation time.Â
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- One of the following:
- Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 semester or 90 quarter credits), OR
- An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, OR
- Passing score on a state-approved test.
- Basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Experience working with children in an educational setting.
- Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness, and understanding.
- Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
- Ability to be sensitive to the needs of others.
- Lifting may be required for some positions.
- Must be on time to the job every day.
- Ability to work effectively in a team with a classroom teacher, support staff and other paraprofessional employees.
- Some ability to perform basic signing with hearing impaired children may be required for certain positions.
Preferred:
- Experience working with children with disabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:
- Assist in preparing instructional plans and lessons for students.
- Assist in the day-to-day operation of the school program by preparing behavior modification charts, point charts, bonus coupons and homework sheets; monitoring student attendance, and collecting data or other related activities. Record student progress on appropriate documents and maintain official school district student records.
- Assist the teacher in the preparation and housekeeping of the classroom by cleaning, arranging or storing materials, furniture, equipment and written documents and files.
- Work directly with individual students and groups in daily activities and assignments, providing direction and assistance.
- Monitor and manage student behavior by providing appropriate activities, attention and directions, pacing and cues, feedback and consequences for behaviors.
- Relate to students in a patient, supportive and warm manner; intervene with students in crisis in a calm and empathic manner.
- Participate in school related activities outside the classroom such as home visits with the teacher, family night or field trips.
- Work cooperatively with staff, other professionals and parents.
- Participate in staffing and conferences related to students and to the program by reporting on data collected, providing feedback on data, and reporting pupil progress for the classroom and program (evening meetings when needed).
- Assist the instructional team in providing individualized instruction by tutoring students who need extra help in completing assignments, providing enrichment activities for students, supervising study sessions, and organizing and implementing applications of the computer as a supplemental instructional tool.
- Assist in the development and organization of program activities and services by reporting student observations, gathering information, and providing suggestions.
- Attend team and school staff meetings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
PAY, BENEFITS & WORK SCHEDULE
This is a 10 month position working 37.5 hours per week.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the SPFE – Educational Assistant’s negotiated labor agreement. The salary schedule can be found on the Labor Agreements page.Â

Transcript – Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire. You must submit official transcripts within 30 days of your start date. Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.
