This position will be a full-time bilingual Educational Assistant 1 Floater position with the Office of Multilingual Learning (OMLL).Â
Must be able to read, write, and speak Spanish.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Educational Assistant Floater will be scheduled to provide supports to students in the specialized program classrooms, so staffing is maintained during other assistants’ breaks and lunches. At other times of the day, the EA1 will be assigned to support instruction for other students with Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) who have paraprofessional support on their IEPs in general education and special education classrooms.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One of the following:
– An AA, AS, AAS (or higher) degree, OR
– Two years of post-secondary coursework (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited institution of higher education which are applicable toward a bachelor¿s degree, OR
– Passing score on the ParaPro or Paraeducator Assessment AND either a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
Must be bilingual in English and in another identified language (Spanish):
– A passing score of 75 (or higher) is required on each portion of the language assessment.
TYPICAL DUTIES EXPECTED TO BE PERFORMED
The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties. Able to perform the duties in these various environmental conditions.
- Work under the direction of a licensed teacher and/or other licensed personnel for all academic, social-emotional, behavioral and functional supports for students.
- Assist in implementing instructional plans and lessons for students.
- Support the implementation of Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), 504 Plan and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) for students with disabilities.
- Assist in the day-to-day operation of the school program by preparing behavior modification charts, point charts, bonus coupons and homework sheets; monitoring student attendance, and collecting data or other related activities. Record student progress on appropriate documents or electronically and maintain official school district student records.
- Assist the teacher in the preparation and housekeeping of the classroom by cleaning, arranging or storing materials, furniture, equipment and written documents and files.
- Work directly with individual students and groups in daily activities and assignments, providing direction and assistance.
- Monitor and manage student behavior by providing appropriate activities, attention and directions, pacing and cues, feedback and consequences for behaviors.
- Relate to students in a patient, supportive and warm manner; intervene with students in crisis in a calm and empathic manner.
- Participate in school related activities outside the classroom such as home visits with the teacher, family night or field trips.
- Work cooperatively with staff, other professionals and parents.
- Participate in staffing and conferences related to students and to the program by reporting on data collected, providing feedback on data, and reporting pupil progress for the classroom and program (evening meetings when needed).
- Assist the instructional team in providing individualized instruction by tutoring students who need extra help in completing assignments, providing enrichment activities for students, supervising study sessions, and organizing and implementing applications of the computer as a supplemental instructional tool.
- Assist in the development and organization of program activities and services by reporting student observations, gathering information, and providing suggestions.
- Become skilled in using iPads to support student learning and data collection.
- Must be physically be able to lift more than 40 pounds when applicable.Â
- Able to sit, walk, climb, crouch, kneel, push, talk and hear.
- Some positions require assisting students with toileting, hygiene, dressing and eating.Â
- In secondary schools, the position may include being a Check and Connect mentor for assigned students. If assigned, additional training will be provided for this role.
- Attend team and school staff meetings.
- If needed by the school, it is expected to be the bus aide on a Special Education bus to assure that students are safely transported to and from school.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- This position will also be responsible for the Schools Check In Program.
- Elementary School Floater Special Education-Educational Assistant (EA1) will be scheduled to provide supports to students in the specialized program classrooms so staffing is maintained during other assistants¿ breaks and lunches. At other times of the day, the EA will be assigned to support instruction for students with IEPs in general education and special education classrooms. If not riding a bus before and after school, the EA will use this time to assist with aggregating data for teachers, scheduling due process meetings, as well as other assigned responsibilities to support the overall special education program and teachers.
- Special Education EAs are required to register for the Special Education orientation, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), bus safety and CPR trainings.
- All Educational Assistant positions may require bus duty. Bus duty includes helping load handicapped students with disabilities into bus; lock wheelchairs into place; fasten seatbelt and/or shoulder harness; help keep order on bus; maintain comfort and hygiene on bus. Assist in unloading bus; bring students into school building; take students to proper classroom. Escort students from bus to the curb. In addition, behavior interventions plans for the bus are implemented These duties can take place within the school building, on the bus, on field trips or field experiences, and at play.
- Before and after school, the EA will use this time to assist with aggregating data for teachers, scheduling due process meetings, as well as other assigned responsibilities to support the overall special education program and teachers.
- Special Education EAs are required to register for the Special Education orientation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
– Basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics.
– Basic skills in typing and duplicating may be required for some positions.
– Experience working with children in an educational setting.
– Ability to develop good relationships with students and staff.
– Ability to be sensitive to the needs of others.
– Ability to relate to students with warmth, friendliness and understanding.
– Ability to work effectively in a team with a classroom teacher, support staff and other paraprofessional employees.
– Some ability to perform basic signing with hearing impaired children may be required for certain positions.
– Lifting may be required for some Teaching Assistant positions.
– Must be on time to the job every day.
PAY, BENEFITS, AND WORK SCHEDULE
This is a 10-month position working 37.5 hours per week.
