Position Overview: Director of Summer Theater Program
Hours/Day: Varies
Days/Year:  Summer Only
Compensation/benefits: Stipend Position

Job Summary:

The Director of Summer Theater Program is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a summer theater production, ensuring a high-quality experience for participants, staff, and audiences. The Director will lead the artistic vision, casting, rehearsals, and production process while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages creativity and collaboration among participants of diverse backgrounds and skill levels. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

Program Planning and Management

  • Develop a comprehensive schedule for auditions, rehearsals, and performances.

  • Coordinate with Community Education staff to finalize production dates, venues, and other logistical needs.

  • Manage the program budget, ensuring responsible allocation of resources.

Artistic Direction

  • Lead the creative vision for the production, including staging, choreography, and music direction (in collaboration with consultant, if needed).

  • Guide participants through the rehearsal and performance process, teaching theater techniques and building confidence.

Team Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise production staff, including music directors, choreographers, stage managers, and technical crew.

  • Provide direction and support for cast, volunteers and community members assisting with the program.

  • Serve as a mentor to participants, fostering a positive and educational experience.
     

Community Engagement

  • Promote the summer theater program within the community, encouraging participation from all groups.

  • Under the supervision of the Community Engagement Coordinator, partner with local businesses, organizations, and media outlets to market the production and secure sponsorships if applicable.

  • Build professional relationships with families and provide weekly updates on participant progress and program details.

Production Logistics

  • Working closely with the Production Manager in all technical aspects of the production, including set design, costumes, props, lighting, and sound.

  • Ensure all rehearsals and performances adhere to safety standards.

  • Coordinate ticket sales and audience engagement strategies in collaboration with administrative staff.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Education and Experience:

  • Experience directing theatrical productions, preferably with youth or community theater programs.

  • Experience working with all diverse populations, including individuals with special needs.

  • Familiarity with theater licensing and rights acquisition processes.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Ability to inspire creativity and collaboration among participants of varying skill levels.

  • Knowledge of theater production elements, including directing, staging, and technical design.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and meet deadlines.
