Summary

HCPA is a Title I Charter School that serves students through a school-wide plan for instruction that is focused on the needs of at-risk students. The Work- Based Learning Coordinator assists students (grades 9-12, ages 14-21) in their search for jobs, volunteering opportunities and internships in the community as part of the Occupational Internship offered to all students.

Description

The WBL Coordinator will assist with providing instruction through Work-Based Learning Seminars which are semester long courses where students learn the basics of seeking, securing and maintaining employment as well as planning for future career and the world of work.  Three main focus areas prepare students for the world of work beyond high school by learning about job readiness, career investigation and personal finance as it relates to employment.

The DAPE Teacher provides individualized and small group direct instruction in order to adapt physical education curriculum to the needs of each student and also aligned with best practices in the field of Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE).

Responsibilities

WBLC
Basic Job Readiness
Students learn the steps and activities involved in securing part-time employment by working on:

  • The application process online and on paper
  • Job Interviews and interviewing strategies
  • Writing cover letters, resumes and letters of resignation
  • Establishing good references
  • Safety in the workplace
  • Essential workplace qualities and behaviors.

Career Investigation and Post-Secondary Planning
Career Seminar also helps students investigate and plan for their future careers by completing:

  • Interest and aptitude assessments
  • Employability Skills Surveys
  • Career exploration and research
  • Post-Secondary options and research

Financial Literacy
Students learn how employment and getting paid impacts where they live, what they can afford and how they manage their lives.  Students participate in activities that examine

  • Essential work related forms and documents including W-2, W-4, 1099, and 1040EZ
  • Pay stub information, deductions and taxes
  • Banking and Budgeting
  • Financial planning for the future
  • Establishing and managing credit
  • Basic insurance needs

DAPE

  • Lead a specially designed physical education program for students with disabilities and/or a substantial delay or disorder in physical development
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of instructional best practices and methodology for Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE)
  • Facilitate, write and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Conduct an evaluation and determine if a student requires specially designed physical education instruction
  • Collaborate with others to plan, teach and support students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment
  • Advocate for students with disabilities to ensure high levels of achievement

Other
Supervise student activities, which may include:
o    Bus duty – assist with walking students to the busses at the end of the day
o    Breakfast and/or lunch duty – assist with monitoring based on a rotational schedule

  • Responds appropriately and promptly to parent, student, and staff member needs.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding students and the educational setting.

Engagement Activities

Volunteer activities
3 HCPA volunteer activities are required. These events take place outside of the traditional school day. Staff may select the activities that fit best with their interests and student grade level. These activities may include open houses, school dances, prom, concerts, etc.

Required activities:

  • Fall and Spring Parent /Teacher Conferences
  • HCPA Graduation

Misc. Committees
There are many additional opportunities for members of the HCPA teaching staff to engage with the community and personally expand their skills. Participation in these committees is highly encouraged. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience with special education students in an organized setting or equivalent.
  • License / Certification Requirements: Possess a current MN Teaching License in Special Education or interest in pursuing a MN Work-Based Learning Coordinator License
  • Licensed by the Minnesota Department of Education in Developmental/Adaptive Physical Education
  • Strong interpersonal skills – the ability to work effectively with students, parents, district staff and community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task.
  • Knowledge of the programs, functions, and procedures of a school setting.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound and effective judgment within established guidelines.

  • Experience with culturally responsive practices that lead to equitable outcomes for all students, particularly those groups of students that are over-represented in special education
  • Ability to work efficiently, effectively, and cooperatively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to relate positively to students, staff, and community
  • Experience working in a school setting or with children ages birth through 21
  • Ability to direct the work of paraprofessionals and an understanding of practices for training and supporting paraprofessionals
  • Knowledge of best practices in the field of special education and implementation strategies for sensory activities, positive behavior support, academic instruction, development of routines, etc.
  • Thorough understanding of the laws, rules and regulations of special education
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of weight, tolerate sudden jarring movement and tolerate frequent bending and lifting
  • Ability to provide travel for self between location

Work Environment/Conditions

  • Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-level building that has an elevator and is accessible.
  • Position requires extensive interaction with children of all ages.
  • Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; children speaking or laughing loudly).
  • Operate standard equipment (computer, fax machine, telephone, copier machines, etc.).
  • Fast-paced environment.
  • Requires frequent keyboarding which calls for repetitive motion and rapid eye movements, frequent use of the telephone.
  • Position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time, ability to push, reach, or bend.
  • Work may require weekend and/or evening work and some travel may be required.

Teachers and Paraprofessionals

Duties may occasionally be performed:

  • on field trips away from school.
  • in outdoor environments, such as athletic fields or playgrounds.
  • in varying weather conditions, such as hot or cold weather.
