Position Title: 2nd Shift Custodian – 2:30pm – 11:00pm
Department/Building:  Brainerd High School
Reports to: Director of Building & Grounds
Position Duty Days/Contract:  12  months, 8 hour days
 
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Buildings and Grounds, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipment in functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs related duties and general maintenance work as required.
  • Clean classrooms
  • Empty trash
  • Clean instructional boards (whiteboard / chalkboard / smartboard) as requested by Teachers
  • Clean and sanitize classroom sinks
  • Vacuum floors
  • Dust ledges and furniture
  • Move tables and chairs to accommodate cleaning

Maintain building floors and hallways

  • Empty trash
  • Clean hallways using dust mop, vacuum, and walk behind or ride-on scrubbers.

Clean Restrooms

  • Follow cleaning instructions for each restroom and equipment
  • Follow dispensing system instructions for mixing chemicals
  • Empty trash containers
  • Wipe mirrors
  • Mop floors
  • Scrub sinks and toilets
  • Operate restroom cleaning equipment (Reel Cleaner or Kaivac)

Perform Grounds Work

  • Utilize rakes, shovels, hoses and other landscaping tools and equipment
  • Utilize a shovel
  • Pick up trash 

SAFETY SENSITIVE JOB DUTIES

  • Operate riding and walk behind floor sweepers and scrubbers
  • Operate a riding and walk behind lawn mower
  • Operate weed whips and other lawn maintenance equipment
  • Operate snow removal equipment
  • Operate aerial lifts over ten feet

ADDITIONAL DUTIES       

  • Performs general cleaning, and repair work, particularly during school vacations.
  • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Eligible to operate school district vehicles according to District guidelines
  • Wash windows
  • Utilize a ladder
  • Paint classroom walls or touch up paint as necessary
  • Strip and wax floors, shampoo carpet
  • Maintain lockers and locker combinations
  • Clean kitchen and other areas
  • Report any building or personnel issues to supervisor

EQUIPMENT
Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and district office, may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
  • Must comply with school district’s chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets
  • Ability to lift 90 pounds

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
    Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • Maintain high custodial standards
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and people skills and is able to anticipate the needs of the school staff and public
  • Possess time management skills in a fast-paced, diverse environment
  • Maintain a neat and clean appearance
  • Possess a strong attendance history; punctual for each shift, including break times.
  • Ability to lift 90 pounds

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
  • Possess a strong attendance history; punctual for each shift, including break times.
  • Maintain high custodial standards
