Saint Paul Public Schools is looking for Clerk Typist 2 candidates!

General Information

Performs intermediate level clerical, typing and/or word processing work of moderate complexity and variety; and performs other related duties as required.

Supervision Received

Works under moderate supervision of a unit supervisor or a higher level  clerical employee.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate and two years of clerical experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the policies, procedures, and services of the organization.
  • Working knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Working knowledge of word processing packages.
  • Working skill in typing and/or word processing with speed and accuracy.
  • Working ability to work with detailed information accurately.
  • Working ability to make simple arithmetic computations with speed and accuracy.
  • Working ability to sort, alphabetize, file, search and/or retrieve computerized and/or manual records and files.
  • Working ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working ability to operate modern office equipment.
  • Working ability to communicate effectively in person and/or over the telephone.
  • Working ability to interact effectively with employees in other units of the organization, other departments, and the general public.

Typical Duties Performed

The listed examples may not include all the duties performed by all positions in this class.

  • Types and/or word processes letters, narrative and statistical reports, schedules, lists, forms, cards, labels, envelopes and other related materials according to general guidelines.
  • Prepares, types and/or word processes routine correspondence according to well-established guidelines and procedures. 
  • Transcribe memoranda, letters, reports and other materials from Dictaphone recordings.
  • Answers telephone and receives visitors; determines nature of business, directs individuals to appropriate staff, or supplies information where a working knowledge of the operation is necessary.
  • Processes routine complaints and inquiries by explanation of office procedures, verification of records, correction of records, or referral to higher authority.
  • Compiles and maintains complex or involved records, files, schedules, and statistics.
  • Compiles and maintains simple accounting and financial records where no technical bookkeeping knowledge is required.
  • Maintains and codes labor, material, and cost records of various accounts and prepares routine reports as required.
  • Audits and reconciles reports, invoices, and other statistical data from various sources.
  • Maintains perpetual inventories, conducts physical inventories, and requisitions supplies.
  • Checks and prepares payroll time sheets, employee hours worked, overtime, and related forms and records.
  • Operates office equipment such as copy machine, adding machine, postage machine, calculator, and telephone system.
  • Operates a computer to access information and perform on occasion routine data entry work.
  • Performs on occasion routine typing or word processing of materials  including lists, envelopes, and form letters where speed and accuracy are not a major factor.
  • Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail.

Pay, Benefits and Work Schedule

This is a 10 and 12 month positions working 40 hours per week.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the AFSCME negotiated labor agreement. The labor agreement and salary schedule can be found at Labor Agreements – Saint Paul Public Schools (spps.org). The minimum rate of pay for this position is $17.83 per hour.

Transcript – Unofficial transcripts are accepted at the time of hire.  You must submit official transcripts within 30 days of your start date.  Formal credential evaluation is required for post-secondary education completed outside of the United States.

A civil service test will be administered to create an open entrance eligible list of candidates for this classified civil service position. You will be notified via email of the exam.   Once a list is created, it will be used for all Clerk Typist 2 positions that may occur for up to 1 year from the date of the exam.

Exam Information

The test is available for all qualified candidates.

Weight:  100% Practical Examination 

Qualifying:  45 WPM

A passing score of at least 75% is required on the exam. You will be notified of the results of the exam via email.
