Licensure or Certification: Current MN State Food Manager Certificate 
Compensation: Non-Exempt, hourly position, Commensurate with experience & education

School Year: 2024-2025, starting August of 2024

General Description:  
This position works collaboratively with the Nutrition Educator, Food Service Director, Head of School and other nutrition team members to ensure seamless preparation, service, and clean-up of the GRS food program. The Kitchen Manager should offer insight, ideas, and facilitate implementation of strategic goals and programs decided by the nutrition team and in line with the National School Lunch Program requirements.

Great River School’s kitchen program focuses on: 

  • Collaboration between Chef/Kitchen Manager and licensed educators in delivering comprehensive food, garden, and nutrition education.
  • Providing whole, sustainable, and delicious breakfasts and lunches in partnership with co-workers and teaching staff where applicable and appropriate. 
  • Strives to connect students, staff, parents and the surrounding community to our local food system.  
  • management according to budget needs, food safety standards, and National School lunch program standards
  • Supervises kitchen staff: creates schedules, monitors attendance, approves time off, delivers reviews and feedback

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to: 

  • Organizes and oversees food preparation (lunch and breakfast), ordering, and waste 
  • Collaborates with Nutrition Educator to support educational efforts and ensure respectful and helpful use of kitchen space by students
  • Contributes to menu development and execution of new menu items that align with educational goals, student participation and NSLP. 
  • Oversees the POS system in partnership with administration in terms of record keeping, student confidentiality as well as daily serving records within the software.
  • Ensures proper sanitation, safety, and security procedures in all phases of operation.
  • Assist with customer service – help answer emails  and other questions from parents, staff, and students.
  • Maintains proper use and care of all food service equipment.
  • Maintains and updates required food service record-keeping forms including but not limited to: staff training documents, order guides, information sheets, invoices, finance documents, ingredient lists, prep sheets, and reports.
  • Assists with onsite lunch and breakfast production as well as assisting with trip food storage and minor organization. 
  • Shares in dish washing and kitchen cleaning tasks.
  • Actively contributes to a welcoming, positive, and safe work environment for all.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Head of School.

Qualifications: 

  • 4+  years experience in natural food preparation, production kitchens, or other professional kitchen settings.
  • Experience managing and supervising kitchen teams. 
  • Maintains current MN State Food Manager Certificate. 
  • Able to meet physical demands that include performing necessary tasks and activities including but not limited to lifting 50 plus pounds on a regular basis and being on your feet for 6 plus hours a day. 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Solid understanding of logistical needs to run food service operations.
  • Works cooperatively with co-workers and management staff.
  • Completes tasks required by following established procedures. 
  • Experience with school lunch kitchens and/or teaching a plus.
